The Pope reminds me of a version of Catholicism I knew growing up as a young man attending anti-war and anti-death penalty protests, where I met elderly Catholics who shared their version of faith with me. I learned that Catholicism was about love and mercy for the weak, the condemned, and the poor.

In my field there has been an uptick in ai article submissions (not at the huge individual level like this), it strains labor and timeline b/c editors have to manage the first level review before anything goes to peer review. Editors are def collectively working on best practices around this…

IMO, the solution should not be to browbeat people into an old standard, but rather allow people to wear whatever they want. If someone can wear ducky pajamas in public, you can wear tailoring in any cut, color, and material. As options open up, dress can then be a source of pleasure.

Below this quote is another post with an image of Ulysses Grant Dietz, great grandson of Civil War general and president Ulysses S. Grant. Yes, Dietz is an author of gay vampire fiction.

To put it in a way that may get at people's slowness to realize or reluctance to accept this: the past was not simpler than the present in any general sense, nor were people in the past less complex. They did not all think similarly. Assuming otherwise is not historical thinking, merely nostalgia.

This is the thing that so many Americans don’t seem to grasp: private companies are in it to make a profit, and nothing else. There are so many important, necessary discoveries that industry will never look into simply because they can’t make enough money on it.

I don't actually think my campus is unique in this - I think this is the overall culture of overwork, undersupport, that you see in many unis where people are conned into thinking just because you like the work you do, or you are one of the "lucky" ones, you should sacrifice your health and family.

One of the more distressing things I've learned since I started organizing here is that in recent years there has been at least one faculty suicide, multiple deaths from cancer, & others mid-treatment for cancer or other serious illness who feel they need to KEEP WORKING instead of take leave.
