The toxicity this policy will introduce in both students and faculty will be off the charts. But most of all I worry about how this will impact vulnerable graduate student teaching fellows who do the bulk of the teaching & grading at Harvard. www.thecrimson.com/article/2026...

Where is the class action lawsuit for those of us who teach, and for those of us who learn — the lawsuit that holds companies accountable for the daily violence of AI? For all the ways it turns student thinking into slop and teachers into cops??? Where is that lawsuit and how do I sign on?

The problem is not that older faculty are sticking around - it’s that they are not being replaced. The argument of this piece is quite pernicious as it substitutes a class war btw workers and a neoliberal administration w an age war btw different ranks of workers

and speaking of which, here's a great piece titled "AI Is Trash" from my colleague @apasek.bsky.social ---> drive.google.com/file/d/1gg9P...
"All in all, this points to a coalitional approach to anti-AI activism. Trash AI is worth naming and opposing across its multiple registers, and with the multiple constituencies that it impacts. This implies a necessarily coalitional politics, one where it’s never strategic to speak of the environmental impacts of technology without also drawing connections to struggles over working conditions, social trust, land use, racism, sexism, and colonialism."

OH MY HEART...the Oberlin Luddites Reject "The Year of AI Exploration"! 💚
photograph or a poster on cream colored paper. "Dear President Ambar,
we are writing to you on a typewriter that is over 70 years old. This is a
machine that we all know well. With it, we misspell words without the crutch of spell check or generative AI and we think intently about every phrase we pound out. As we force ourselves, for once, to slow down, we engage in a cognitive dialogue with ourselves. We do not seek perfection because we know that education is about the growing and challenging of our young minds' potential, not the chasing of institutional 'gold-star' approval. We do not believe that your so-called 'Year of AI Exploration; providing enterprise ChatGPT and Google Gemini subscriptions to every Oberlin student aligns with our college's founding principles. You claim that this year will be one of experimentation, not adoption. But even just one semester of accepted (encouraged even) chat bot use will jettison our student body down a lazy and irredeemable tunnel of intellectual destruction. We are a college grounded in learning and labor, which now risks straying from these rooted ideals. With ChatGPT at the helm, our emails, essays, and discussion posts will be generated for us, not by us. And let's not fool ourselves. This is precisely what these platforms will be used for by our busy, anxious student body. We see your vision for this year as.advancing the college's 'businessification'--an alarming trend also seen in the takeover of our beloved library cafe by a 'bookstore' with no books in stock and an app replacing customer service. In one instance, the college assumes we want efficiency at all costs through automated rather than hand pulled coffee. In the other lies the false belief that we simply desire to turn in an essay, regardless of how little we've written of it." there's more that doesn't fit in the 2000 character limit :(

Much of what you need to know about the politics of that Yale report can be encompassed in the fact that Heterodox Academy has walked right up to the line of claiming outright credit for its contents. (You should also read this thread).
A screenshot of a portion of a webpage. against a white background with a black, purple, and green logo for "heterodox academy" in the top left corner, there is a banner of larger black text that reads "news and announcements." Underneath that banner is a photo of a college green and library. In the foreground is the green grass, and in the background is a network of fancy brownish gray stone buildings resembling a big cathedral. There are benches on the right side of the the grass, backed by a wall that seems to divide up the green from another area. Superimposed upon the blue sky above the grass and buildings are words in white, which read "heterodox academy. Yale's 'Trust' Report affirms HxA's Open Inquiry U Agenda."

No one is going to close Yale if the anti-university flames are fanned even higher. But small public colleges are put at real risk by this largely manufactured narrative. It would help us all out if the wealthy, elite institutions would at least refrain from reinforcing the attacks on higher ed.

Article title: The NYT wrote more about Harvard last year than all community colleges combined I posted three main figure from the article below www.vox.com/2014/7/23/59...
Line graph of the ny times mentions of Princeton, Yale, Harvard, and the literal words "community college" which shows that each of those institutions was talked about more than all community colleges. Data goes from 1860 to 2010. Community colleges are basically never mentioned until the 1960s and then plateau at around. 5% of total articles by 1980 (and that continues until 2010). Princeton, Yale, and Harvard start above 0 but before. 5% in the late 1800s but soon jump to vertebrae 1 and 2.5%, generally moving together until WWII when Harvard moves to being the most cited at 2 to 2.5% while Princeton and Yale continue to move together around 1.5 to 1%.
