My book Pride: The Celebration & the Struggle, is on this list. It's about the long, ongoing fight for LGBTQ+ rights and I wrote it for kids & teens who want to learn about queer history, community & activism. These bigots view all queer representation (& existence) as filthy. Their goal is erasure.

No country that arrested librarians and booksellers was on the right side of history. But that's what's happening in Arkansas, and book banners aim to replicate that lousy legislation across the country. Speak up! Take action! Fight back!

One of three national book ban bills to call about today!
Slide 1: a blue graphic with an outline of the United States. Red and white text reads: Call. National Book Banning Bill Proposed in US House of Reps. Tell your rep: Vote no on H.R. 7661.

Slide 2: a blue and red graphic with white text that reads: House Republicans have introduced a bill to effectively grant the federal government decision-making power over what books make it into the library. H.R. 7661 is a national-level book banning bill that would ban any book that, according to the bill's language, "(ii) involves gender dysphoria or transgenderism." This means any book about a trans person or the trans experience would be banned from every public school in the United States.

Slide 3: a blue graphic with red and white text that reads: Call your reps. Tell them they must oppose this bill at every turn. It is egregiously unconstitutional, targets ideas based on ideological disapproval, and misleads parents and the public about the content of children's books. It does nothing to protect kids and will badly harm education. It will tie school material funding into knots and hurt anyone who is a library materials vendor, regardless of content. If you are a bookseller, librarian, or author, tell them your livelihood depends on the next generation of readers.

More info & talking points on HR 8705, which has passed out of committee & is waiting to be introduced to the House. (As if Sunday evening)
Vote NO on HR 8705 01
A black and white graphic with the AABB logo and text that reads: Statement of Opposition Re: HR 8705 “The CHARLIE ACT”. Authors Against Book Bans (AABB) strongly opposes H.R. 8705, aka the Civics and History Advancement to Restore Learning, Integrity, and Education (CHARLIE) Act. H.R. 8705 is the latest legislation in the GOP’s crusade to try to erase entire communities from the story of the United States, and it will have a suppressive and damaging effect on our schools and libraries.

Member of @authorsabb.bsky.social @jerroldconnors.bsky.social came through in the best way and assembled this for us all! Know thine shitty bills!
Three poop colored circles in a Venn diagram, 8705: mandates teaching propagandistic US history, HR 7661: will banned undefined "sexually oriented" materials, HR 2616 will mandate teachers to put trans and nb students. ALL 3 will ban books. ALL THREE are transphobic bs.

As the editor of a book on this list, allow me to say again that book banning is a catastrophe for freedom of speech in America. There is no silver lining. It's all harm. You can fight back by calling your reps to demand they vote against HR 7661, which is effectively a national book banning bill.

Fuck this. As an industry, we are in an existential crisis of book banning because of homophobia and transphobia weaponized by racist authoritarians. “Dirty books” are not the problem. Censorship is. Make whatever books you like, but don’t you dare call other books dirty in your shitty marketing.

“If you could read Toni Morrison, why would you read AI?” As a teacher in Texas, this quote caused me an involuntary sob.
Screenshot from article. Images of Joyce Carol Oates, over this quote:

“If you could read Toni Morrison, why would you read AI?” Oates asks. And as a writer, Ward says, “I need to go through the entire process, because there are things that I’m learning and revelations that I’m working my way towards, and I need to do that work because it enables me to keep living.”

Groff: “I understand that this is a question of vital importance to a lot of people, particularly to other mothers who are artists trying to get their work done, and know that I feel for everyone in the struggle. But until I see a male writer asked that question, I am going to respectfully decline to answer it.”

Cartoon of a woman speaking to a group of commas on the ground. She says, “I’m sorry, but I just can’t keep you all in my manuscript. It’s nothing personal!” The commas respond with speech bubbles: “Don’t listen to those Oxford comma haters,” “Pick on the semi-colons instead,” and “You serial comma killer!” The artist’s signature and website (Debbie Ridpath Ohi – DebbieOhi.com) appear at the bottom.
