Shigeru Miyamoto has claimed that Toad is his least favorite character in Mario Kart. Despite this, in all footage of him playing Mario Kart 8, he picked Toad every time. Whether he was joking or specifically picking a character he hates to challenge himself is unknown.
I have an important question. Nintendo has also just released Mariokart 7 for the 3DS. In every iteration of Mariokart, I've always preferred to play as Toad. Who's your favorite character?
That's the most challenging question! I'm sorry that I cannot come up with an interesting answer. Somehow, it's habit to me, but I play with Mario. He's a very balanced character.
Who's your least favorite character?
Toad. [Laughs]
My favorite character is your least favorite character?
I understand that he has some popularity. Somehow.
In a 2012 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Shigeru Miyamoto has claimed Toad is his least favorite Mario Kart character.
In December 2014, Shigeru Miyamoto and Bill Trinen played Mario Kart 8 against YouTuber Rosanna Pansino. Miyamoto picked Toad.
Also in December 2014, Shigeru Miyamoto and Bill Trinen played Mario Kart 8 against YouTuber iJustine. Miyamoto picked Toad again.
Finally, in January 2015, the two played Mario Kart 8 against YouTube group Smosh Games. Miyamoto picked Toad again.
Whether Miyamoto simply had an enormous change of heart about Toad in the intervening 2 years, or whether he was picking his least favorite to challenge or punish himself, is unknown.

A BIG focus of the Fire Emblem series is relationships, it's about as much about relationships as it is about battles. Same with say Midnight Suns. Other tactics games like Advance Wars don't have relationships as a core pillar so their runtime is mostly the battles.

Every time I see someone declaring that games are just Bad Now and have been since like 2010... I really think they might be in a parallel dimension or something. Either that, or it's just the depression talking. It's not uncommon for a dozen great games to launch in ONE DAY right now.

If you hit the 10 threshold as 'mixed', featured or not, you probably won't hit the next threshold will you? It's definitely more harmful than not, especially to a small title, to leave a negative review.

The fact in this headline it is being used to distinguish 'non-gameplay' "romance features" from 'gameplay' shooting and driving is pretty transparent in the gendered connotations, I think!

Until then, you're going to see big-budget games that are very similar, because it's the only way to load the dice in a way that makes financial sense for a big studio, as every game is a financial gamble.

Or, and this is my preference, Game Developers need to have universal basic income.

Sean Flannigan @radnom.bsky.social · 27/08/2026
If we want big-budget AAA games that take inspiration from more sources, then: Game players need to spend big money on small games and game journalists need to report on small interesting games more than big ones for the studios to get big enough to make their games bigger.

When I look at the scope and breadth and amazing creativity of the hundreds of games that release every day by creators all over the world, the big problems I see are that people don't know where to find the games that might speak to them, or don't want to buy ones that don't have mega buck budgets.

Sean Flannigan @radnom.bsky.social · 27/08/2026
I don't see any problems in that at all. And players enjoy it too, for the most part. We don't get abstract paintings without artists taking inspiration from other paintings. It's orobouric but not inherently problematic, we get new and exciting stuff from that process.

Sean Flannigan @radnom.bsky.social · 27/08/2026
Game devs like to take one game and mix it with another because it's fun to make, same way that painters like to take inspiration from the approaches of other paintings and remix into their own style, because they enjoy it. Game development is artistic expression, especially at small scales.

Sean Flannigan @radnom.bsky.social · 27/08/2026
I don't think this is a problem at all. we still get games inspired by non-games all the time, and also, I think there's beauty in distilling the medium. You don't get a movement like Dada based on experiences and nature alone, some art can only come from reflecting, distilling, rejecting prior art

Rune Factory Guardians of Azuma! It's a spinoff title, not a numbered one (or else it'd be like 8?) but it's very very good - it was the first game I picked up for Switch 2, I only got it because I didn't realise Donkey Kong Bananza wasn't a launch game. It blew me away!

I think 4-directional attacks and then have the enemy line up with the player before attacking will work well! You could also do more sweepy attacks rather than vertical swipes to cover a larger area (say 100 degree cone) for damage per attack

Great book idea, cheats were such a fun and integral part of games and it's a shame they aren't used more. I had a lot of fun as a kid playing around with games rather than just playing them. Points to Civ II for making cheats a whole dropdown menu.

Seemingly hot take, but I would take the flip for a billion because a 50:50 chance of putting -hundreds of millions of dollars- into my community, charities, etc. is worth it compared to a million which would probably just give me personal comfort. The billion is only selfish if you keep it!

It's not so much a baffling design decision as it is just the easiest code implementation, I see in newbie code all the time. Basically, if input.right, go right, else if input.left, go left.
