time once again for my annual post: evacuating from hurricanes costs money and resources that a lot of people don’t have and the local governments often don’t adequately provide. evacuating is logistically difficult, sometimes impossible, and is hard to justify when the results are unpredictable.

Alright everybody, time to text the teachers in your life. The fall semester is open at SkypeAScientist and we are ready to match classrooms, scout troops, library groups, and more with scientists! Tell the educators in your life, and send them to SkypeAScientist.com
A frog uses its comically long tongue to catch a fleeing fly and the words say “send this to a teacher” pointing right. Then under the tongue it says “Skype a scientist matches classrooms with scientists for free Q&As” and there’s a little pond scene with lily pads and spatterdock flowers and a rock with a snail on it and a salamander with the words get a match at Skype scientist.com

If you’re not an expert and your uninformed personal opinion disagrees with expert consensus on a technical topic: Please consider that “the experts who’ve spent years studying this know something I don’t” is far more likely than “I alone discovered something that all the world’s experts missed.”

Yesterday’s warm weather called for a refreshing misting session! 💦🦉 Our two-month-old spectacled owlet cooled off with a gentle rain shower. Misting helps keep owls comfortable on warm days while also helping clean and condition their feathers. Safe to say this little one was a fan. 💙

Also sometimes life doesn't pause even if you think it will! All three of these things happened to me while I was completing my PhD. I didn't expect it either, my plan was degree, job, find a partner, maybe have kids. It definitely didn't work out that way and I still got that degree!

Please remember when you swim in the ocean: 200 meters below you, there is a layer of fish that stretches all around the world. It is so dense, that when it was discovered during WWII it scared the navy so bad they bombed it. This is the ocean's thin inner shell of fish [🧵]

When someone says „Scientists do not want you to know“ you can dismiss everything from there on. Scientists want you to know. They are desperate that you know. They can’t shut up about what they found out and want you to know.

I wrote this about him and the new DoD almost a year ago "They want to invade — somewhere, anywhere — and blow shit up." www.jezebel.com/pentagon-pre...
This is only one of many examples. There is a style, cadence, and word choice to DoD press releases in this somehow-still-young administration that provide a fascinating, if largely uncomplicated glimpse at the type of limited, childish ghouls currently in charge of the world’s largest military. There are warriors and warfighters everywhere; there is lethality, and force, and strength; there is a sneering dismissiveness of anything else the sprawling military apparatus engages in besides pointing guns at people and shooting them. The releases are the way a Fox News Pentagon talks, what they assume Secretary of Defense John Wayne would sound like. This isn’t, of course, purely an exercise in misdirected machismo in language. Mixed in with the president’s clear imperial and expansionist goals, the fact that the DoD brass talk like someone likely to pull a gun on anyone who knocks on the door is a huge “warfighting” alarm bell. They don’t want the US military to be some big peacekeeping force that builds dams and shakes hands with locals; they want to invade — somewhere, anywhere — and blow shit up.

Franzi Schimmer captured this Grizzly bear in Brooks Falls, Alaska just floating along, tippy-tapping down the river, browsing the salmon. Prior to hibernation, up to 40% of a bear's body mass is fat, which is less dense than water (~0.9 g/cm^2), so the murder-monster is also a floaty-boaty.

Worth watching this in full. The statement is more powerful than this quote alone. Here is is from USA Today, with alt text. Also! Rich Ruohonen is a personal injury lawyer and the oldest athlete to ever represent the United States in a Winter Games at 54 years old.
"I'm proud to be here to represent Team USA, and to represent our country. But we'd be remiss if we didn't at least mention what's going on in Minnesota and what a tough time it's been for everybody. This stuff is happening right, right around where we live""I am a lawyer, as you know, and we have a constitution," Ruohonen continued, "and it allows us to (have) freedom of press, freedom of speech, protects us from unreasonable searches and seizures, and makes it that we have to have probable cause to be pulled over. And what's happening in Minnesota is wrong. There's no shades of grey. It's clear.""I really love what's been happening there now with people coming out, showing the love, the compassion, integrity and respect for others that they don't know, and helping them out," Ruohonen said. "And we love Minnesota for that.

"And I want to make it clear that we are out here, we love our country. We're playing for the U.S. We're playing for Team USA. And we're playing for each other, and we're playing for our family and our friends that sacrificed so much to be here today. And that doesn't change anything.

"Because what the Olympics means is excellence, respect, friendship, and we all, I think, exemplify that. And we are playing for the people of Minnesota and the people around the country who share those same values. That compassion, that love and that respect."

A desperate plea sent to me by a Minneapolis resident who's been on the front lines since the beginning of the ICE occupation:
Just a quick update from the Twin Cities. (Please forgive the unsolicited message). THINGS ARE NOT BETTER IN MINNEAPOLIS. The media is mostly moving on, Trump is focused on other stuff, BUT NOTHING HAS CHANGED ON THE GROUND. More than 2,000 DHS thugs continue to roam the streets, abducting people 24/7, assaulting legal observers with impunity, and routinely denying 1st, 4th, and 5th amendment rights. Drones and helicopters are overhead every day. Hundreds and hundreds of terrified families have not left their homes since mid-December ... relying on the community to bring them food and help with rent and other necessities. (Those people are NOT violent drug cartel sex offending murderers, as DHS would tell you. Most are legal residents or citizens.) If anything, things have just become more stressful and intractable (think trench warfare as a suitable metaphor): The resistance is better organized and numerous, but DHS has become more clever and better at disguise... and the county sheriff's office is increasingly supporting them . Do not let anyone tell you that Homans (the new person in charge of the occupation) is making anything better. Do not let anyone tell you that 700 ICE agents leaving the city has made much of a difference; the remaining force (again, ~2,000) is still larger than the entire city's police force (which is legally unable to do anything). Please call your congressional reps ... especially if there is any chance the administration might listen to them.
