one example that works here is it has broken the ecosystem for academic grant bids and to some extent publishing - the gatekeepers are overwhelmed so essentially now no one's grant bid gets read

This is your occasional reminder that generative "AI" in particular could have been developed on public domain materials and/or licensed and compensated works but the major players intentionally, methodically and systemically chose to steal labor from working creative folks instead

But Burnham is pushing towards PR. Which could make this more dangerous for Labour because the Right will be able to say, under their plans they'll be forced into a coalition with these people

I still haven't seen a single person be able to defend or explain why you'd vote against this amendment or why it was unacceptable. It's the smoking gun as to exactly what the Zionism is Racism motion aims to achieve.

GDP also as a measure does not care whether the work done is useful or not. if you pay people to dig holes and fill them in again, GDP increases.

rab181.bsky.social @rab181.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
it will likely get ugly after the war, yeah. but countries are often good at finding ways to put resources to work to make war material for a good few years. look at e.g. UK GDP during and after the world wars, generally you get a sustained spike followed by a big contraction
110
rab181.bsky.social @rab181.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
war is often a stimulus to GDP in the short term. Russia has mobilised a lot of wealth and resources to make weapons (and weapons factories). So it is plausible. but that's why GDP is a crude measure.

agree. and it's not that hard to imagine the stay out campaign somewhat crumbling - being constantly forced to confront the lies they told in 2016 and defend the subsequent reality is going to be tough for them. in 2016 they could sell mystic uplands, not this time

rab181.bsky.social @rab181.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
it's a good piece but it only does half the story. I want to know what David thinks will and should happen next and how Burnham should navigate the contradictions he's shaped for himself

'So, MCFC, your appeal position is that you - lied to the US govt in 2015 - lied to the UEFA hearing in 2020 but we are to believe your convenient change of story now?' it's not going to go well for them is it

rab181.bsky.social @rab181.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
counterpoint: these policies promote social mobility by removing cliff edges in state support. Don't have to worry about savings getting taken to pay for care. don't have to worry about crippling debt if you go to uni. don't have to worry about losing free childcare if you work more. etc.

your characterisation is right (Tariq's is wrong). They argued that the Abu Dhabi govt, not them, paid the extra money and so it's fine since it's not owner funding. The commission rejected this and said it was a nonsense cover story made up after the fact. So, like, good luck with the appeal guys
031
rab181.bsky.social @rab181.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
on the face of it it seems to be an incredibly thin argument (and one the initial commission already explicitly rejected) in the hope of escaping on a technicality. I'd be amazed if it succeeds, but I guess they have nothing else
010
rab181.bsky.social @rab181.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
I'm not suggesting this argument will succeed, just stating what I think their logic seems to be
110
rab181.bsky.social @rab181.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
yes the idea here is that the govt of Abu Dhabi, which coincidentally is run by Sheikh Mansour's brother, just randomly decided to give MCFC £900m for no particular reason. so it's not owner funding you see

I think the short answer here is Starter listened to the wrong people and didn't want to give the Right an easy attack line at a time when anti-woke culture seemed ascendant
000
rab181.bsky.social @rab181.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
it doesn't, but I don't think it requires too much imagination to think that people might want a personalised workout or concentration playlist
001
rab181.bsky.social @rab181.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
up to a point, but a lot of people like pretty specific kinds of music to e.g. work or run to, so I can imagine personalisation succeeding there.

I'd love to know what was in, say, Elliot Anderson's contract. If rumours are right Forest asked for full payment upfront in case this happened. So players will presumably have some clauses in there.

My friend's office is next door, I wasn't sure where she was at the time. Just heard from her and thankfully she is unharmed. What is happening in Kyiv right now is truly horrific. Millions of people are at risk of dying at any time. I'm not quite sure this really comes across, abroad.

When farms stop yielding, hunger does not knock — it breaks the door. Across the Horn of Africa, soils that once fed nations are turning barren. This is not “bad weather.” This is climate change rewriting our food systems in real time.

that could be a factor yeah, though Burnham will be keen to keep up his Everyman football fan vibe. The only way to navigate that really is to stick to the absolute letter of what the rules say. So the punishments will be comfortably and provably within the bounds of what the rules say

it's taken so long because so many charges and City will have explored every possible legal avenue to delay or derail. Therefore assume the verdict will be as watertight as these things get. Appeal can only cover limited aspects I think
