Check out Break the Machine, a novel being published one chapter a day. It started yesterday, so it's easy to go right in now. The book is set in a near and undefined future and follows the story of a violent revolution against a seemingly insurmountable dictatorship in a fictional United States.

Anyway, the point is getting back to finding joy and holding onto it. Building, growing, reading, listening, loving, camaraderie-ing, writing, acting... looking at it it's less a to do list and more a to be list, I guess.

So, I'm going to attempt to find some joy in the daily again. Maybe communicate more. It'll be a challenge because I don't feel like doing much at all. Like, shove me into a sensory deprivation chamber and let my synesthesia take over. Leave me for years.

And while it was nice to get away, it's been hard to sink back into the daily of things I enjoy. I remember my Aunt telling me that she just couldn't read anymore after her wife passed and I didn't understand it then, but I kinda do now.

We took another trip to Indiana where I got to take the kids to some of the places I hung out as a kid visiting family while visiting family (and running another memorial service for my Aunt). Also took an impromptu day trip to Rehoboth Beach with the kids to get the last little bit of Summer in.

Kristoffer Ray @quigonkris.bsky.social · 25/08/2025

We had a week's vacation at the beach with family that was nice, but it came at the heels of my Aunt's passing and a memorial service I ran for her and some jackass totaling my kid's car at a Nelly concert (he's fine; wasn't even in it, thankfully, but we're still dealing with the fallout from it).

Kristoffer Ray @quigonkris.bsky.social · 25/08/2025

Been kinda out of it since early July when my Aunt passed and trying to get back into the daily things I enjoy. Some of it has been because everything is busy and hellish (especially with school starting back up), but that's also not entirely true and mostly a convenient excuse.

Justice Sotomayor's dissent in Skrmetti (which she's now reading from the bench) is deeply pained, accusing her colleagues of abandoning "transgender children and their families to political whims" and badly damaging "bedrock" principles of equal protection. www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/24p...

Tennessee’s law expressly classifies on the basis of sex
and transgender status, so the Constitution and settled
precedent require the Court to subject it to intermediate
scrutiny. The majority contorts logic and precedent to say
otherwise, inexplicably declaring it must uphold Tennessee’s categorical ban on lifesaving medical treatment so
long as “‘any reasonably conceivable state of facts’” might
justify it. Ante, at 21. Thus, the majority subjects a law
that plainly discriminates on the basis of sex to mere rational-basis review. By retreating from meaningful judicial
review exactly where it matters most, the Court abandons
transgender children and their families to political whims.
In sadness, I dissent.

The Code of Virginia defines transition-related health care as medically necessary and prevents health insurers from discriminating against transgender people. The SCOTUS ruling today does not change that law we passed with bipartisan support in 2020 (my bill HB 1429). Here’s the actual text:

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:

1. That the Code of Virginia is amended by adding a section numbered 38.2-3449.1 as follows:

§ 38.2-3449.1. Prohibited discrimination based on gender identity or status as a transgender individual.

A. As used in this section:

"Gender identity" means an individual's internal sense of gender, which may be male, female, neither, or a combination of male and female and which may be different from an individual's sex assigned at birth.

"Medically necessary transition-related care" means any medical treatment prescribed by a licensed physician for treatment of gender dysphoria and includes (i) outpatient psychotherapy and mental health services for gender dysphoria and associated co-morbid psychiatric diagnoses; (ii) continuous hormone replacement therapy; (iii) outpatient laboratory testing to monitor continuous hormone therapy; and (iv) gender reassignment surgeries.

"Transgender individual" means an individual whose gender identity is different from the sex assigned to that individual at birth.

B. A health carrier offering a health benefit plan providing individual or group health insurance coverage shall:

1. Provide coverage under the health benefit plan without discrimination on the basis of gender identity or status as a transgender individual; and

2. Treat covered individuals consistent with their gender identity.

C. A health carrier offering a health benefit plan providing individual or group health insurance coverage shall not deny or limit coverage or impose additional cost sharing or other limitations or restrictions on coverage, under a health benefit plan for health care services that are ordinarily or exclusively available to covered individuals of one sex, to a transgender individual on the basis of the fact that the individual's sex assigned at birth, gender identity, or gender otherwise recorded is different from the one to which such health services are ordinarily or exclusively available.
