I miss these tabs. These tabs were peak.
Google Chrome from the 2016 material design refresh, when they had more angular tabs still but the kind of kitschy brushed aluminum gradients got stripped out

OK while I am mad about UI, everyone is also banned from the "everything is a card" school of design. I was recently faced with this mobile app lookin ass departure board at DFW. Putting everything in rounded boxes within rounded boxes within rounded boxes is making shit completely illegible.
DFW departures board where every flight is on a mobile ass looking card and it's a big unreadable messOld school split-flap display laid out like a spreadsheet

games in general now, not even just aaa games, are way too concerned with the player getting stuck or upset or whatever. why give a shit. The Player is not gonna put the game down as soon as they hit any friction, most of them won't even stop when the game actively makes their life worse

One of the things to come from GamerGate was the gamification of torturing real, live women...hounding them out of their homes, making them look over their shoulders for years. It was treated as a joke, nbd, the work of a few bad apples--as all terrorism against women is--& that failure leads here.

i should clarify, when i write people doing bad things, it's because i am bad. they are me. more importantly, when you read about those bad things, they also become you. that's how story works. in fact, you are going to think about murder before this skeet ends. how's that feel, sicko.

opinions on showing games at events (mostly a memo to myself for the next time i have to do it)
Have a screen visible above the crowd to draw people in.
Show something on it like an attract mode or gameplay video to communicate at a glance what the player does in the game. NOT just a title and logo!
Make the demo station inviting. Decoration, not clutter. Comfy seat, comfy headphones. Unless you NEED a mouse and keyboard, a controller is way friendlier.
Set up some call to action like "Press X to start demo" on screen. People should feel like they can sit down and start without someone giving them help or permission.
Don't stand in the way of the game. People wanna see the game, not you!
Have cards or fliers available for people who are interested, but don't shove them into everybody's hands as they pass.
Don't deliver the game's pitch unless someone is REALLY curious. You are not trying to pull people into a sleazy nightclub, back off and let people explore at their leisure.

Seriously. Even if you are a monster, a person driven to hurt other people, an absolute piece of shit… Even THEN all the data demonstrates that prolonged crunch lowers productivity. Those who cling to it are ignorant, and with the evidence available, actively and intentionally so.

Yeah man, takeout and energy drinks, THAT'S what's gonna make the kids you're burning through like firewood unable to buy a house. Wonder why they buy so much takeout and energy drinks? MAYBE IT'S BECAUSE THEY DON'T HAVE TIME TO COOK AND NEED CAFFEINE TO MAINTAIN YOUR SWEATSHOP.
Screenshot of article: Brammer expresses excitement over the prospect of juniors who have been in the studio for two or three years who are going to "get money to buy a house, or at least a down payment." At the same time, Bulkhead has made redundancies every year for the past six years, laying off about 20 percent of the company.

Following the studio's newfound success, Brammer jokes about having to coach said developers into not spending all their money on "takeaway and energy drinks."

"We have a new responsibility to our younger staff who are making good money, often money they haven’t seen before," he says.

A hundred times this. Consistently disappointed by how many publishers in indie world can’t actually sell a game. Or rather, provide little value in selling a game that isn’t in the thing itself. (Lots of awesome individuals of course, often with hands tied by process and nonsense)

no one is browsing the store page and being like WOW, I HAVE TO USE THE B.R.I.K.X. TOOL TO OPEN DOORS AND GRATES? nobody is reading "play your way" and getting excited. This is not what excites people about games. What excites them is, and always will be, the fantasy. Which is harder to evaluate.

the problem with games is that a lot of people still try to market it as technology and that only worked when it was new technology. It's mature enough now that "check out this amazing feature" no longer matters. Games-as-tech makes it easier to market a game based on lists of things in said game.

this is excellent
stigmatizing Rowling’s weaponization of childhood not only requires personal withdrawal for most people, it necessitates something much more difficult: being a giant fucking killjoy. You should tell people discussing the show that you’re not watching it, and why, and you should let yourself openly cringe at your sister-in-law’s Harry Potter tote bag, and you should bring up unprompted that the onslaught of legislation against trans people makes you sad and angry, presuming it does, and you should do this because, not despite, the fact that it will make you look annoying as hell and may make everyone present uncomfortable. (You probably won’t even get the kudos of looking like a cool ally, because you’re still ultimately talking about Harry Potter. Sorry about that.)

there's a pretty simple connection here 1. humans become good at what they practice doing 2. outsourcing to an AI or even other people, means you have stopped doing the thing 3. if you stop doing the thing, you will stop improving, and, long term, get worse at it (cont.)

Anyone that has ever worked in games can tell you how much a point by point highlight of things that exist is both 1) not effective tutorialization or feature surfacing 2) going to piss off your users No we don't know how to explain that to your boss either.

Too many people in this space ultimately only care about their ability to play games. Their entire ideology is based on the premise that games are some right accorded to them. When that's your most core belief, nothing serious can be built on top of it.

This was, is, and always will be a brilliantly shit illustration of how stupidly self defeating business people can be. Forgoing the universal positive of a staff self-training on their own time, because of the vague fear that one in a hundred might make some money.

The main way in which AI has negatively impacted games industry jobs is not through actual automation of those jobs or even untrue claims about automation. It's by making capital unavailable because it's tied up in AI investments while also destroying the consumer base for video game hardware.
