Hilarious stuff from hypocrite-in-chief Bill Ackman, currently bankrolling Francesca Gino, who has *check notes* sued three brave scholars for telling the truth.

It really is amazing how researchers and journal editors will avoid showing even the most basic courtesy or gratitude to sleuths who point out errors in their work. I get that it's embarrassing, but guess what: that sleuth has read your work more closely than anyone else ever will! For free!

I wrote a blog post on the science behind The Atlantic's "no alcohol for fathers-to-be" piece. quentinandre.net/posts/drunk-...

Do Drunk Mice Sire Weird-Looking Offspring? – Quentin André
A recent piece in The Atlantic argues fathers-to-be should abstain from alcohol when trying to conceive. The science that underpins this recommendation has some issues.

ALL the papers from Michael Golding's lab cited in this piece (the scientist claiming a causal impact of paternal alcohol consumption on fetal outcomes) suffer from pseudoreplication issues. Treatment administered on sires, analysis conducted on pups without random effects.

You have not answered my question. I point to two grave statistical errors in my thread: which one(s) do you think are incorrect, and why? We're not discussing credentials here. Either I'm right or I'm wrong.

Which elements of my argument are not correct in your view? Also, I don't discuss the biology or chemistry, I discuss the statistical techniques used in the paper, which I'm very familiar with and using every week. Don't take my word for it, I've published papers on statistical issues.

Before you panic: The study cited in the intro of this piece has some very very very serious issues: bsky.app/profile/did:...

My unsolicited advice to writers and journalists: Next time you interview a scientist about their groundbreaking, "challenge-all-common-wisdom" finding, seek a dissenting perspective. Ask others for their honest, unfiltered opinion on the paper. We will all be better off. 12/12

People are inundated with restrictive and contradictory health recommendations. Trust in public health is plummeting. So when you are writing about health and medicine, you have a unique responsibility to get things right. 11/N

Quentin André @quentinandre.bsky.social · 17/07/2026
This is not any study. This is the study that, according to @olgakhazan.bsky.social's reporting, launched the field in the direction of "alcohol consumption in male can lead to adverse effects". And its conclusions are derived from completely erroneous statistical analyses! 10/N
130
Quentin André @quentinandre.bsky.social · 17/07/2026
Finally, back to the sample size issue: The authors state Control and Low were topped up from "a separate experimental cohort." Why? They don't tell. How do they account for this in their analysis? They don't. 9/N
120
Quentin André @quentinandre.bsky.social · 17/07/2026
Again, you don't need to be a statistical genius to figure out that a degree of separation like this can only emerge from a procedure that AIMS at maximizing separation. Completely circular reasoning. 8/N
130
Quentin André @quentinandre.bsky.social · 17/07/2026
But then they conduct statistical test of differences between groups on these scores! That's right: They tests for group differences *on variables that were constructed to maximize group differences*! No wonder they report p-values not even found in high-energy physics. 7/N
150
Quentin André @quentinandre.bsky.social · 17/07/2026
There's more! How did the researchers calculate the "morphological differences"? They used something called "canonical variate analysis", a statistical technique that identify axes that *maximize the separation between groups*, and returns a separation score on these axes. 6/N
120
Quentin André @quentinandre.bsky.social · 17/07/2026
Any statistican who has seen this before (insanely small p-values with small N) knows the most likely culprit: "Pseudoreplication", when non-independent observations are analyzed as if they were independent. Claude Opus 4.8 provides an exellent summary of the issue. 5/N
130
Quentin André @quentinandre.bsky.social · 17/07/2026
Yet the effects on morphological differences are HUGE. I'm talking p = 2.1 × 10⁻⁵⁴. This alone should raise a giant red flag: How can the downstream effects of alcohol availability be several dozens of magnitudes larger than the upstream effects? 4/N
121
Quentin André @quentinandre.bsky.social · 17/07/2026
This is expected with such low power: There are 8 sires in Low, 4 in Medium, 4 in High (yes, cells are imbalanced. I'll come back to this). Now, with such low power to detect the impact of the *manipulation*, you'd expect even less power to detect downstream effects. 3/N
110
Quentin André @quentinandre.bsky.social · 17/07/2026
Let's start with the effect size. This figures shows the "manipulation check": The dose of ethanol consumed by the sire. As you can see, the direction is as expected, but the intermediary contrasts (low vs. medium, medium vs. high) barely cross the .05 threshold.

... have them sire offsprings, and measure the craniofacial features of the fetuses. Now, I don't know much about animal studies or biology, but I know about statistics and experimental design... and after spending five minutes on the paper, I could identify MANY issues. 2/N

I wish journalists reported more carefully on science. I really do. A short thread. The study cited at in the intro of this article is a mice study. Researchers randomize male to have access to a low/med/high amount of ethanol... 1/N www.theatlantic.com/family/2026/...

It would be sooo funny if the court ordered Gino to pay legal fees... ... Because then Ackman would have effectively paid money to HBS.
100
Quentin André @quentinandre.bsky.social · 24/06/2026
What next? HBS is, on the basis of these claims, filing for summary judgment: Asking the judge to rule on the available, rather than proceeding with a jury trial. Gino now has a month to respond to these claims.

She also refused to deny or admit that the file had been backdated by her or someone else. 4. She provided no evidence of sex-based discrimination. She only cites a private statement from her friend Gary Pisano... who later testified he couldn't identify any evidence of bias.

Quentin André @quentinandre.bsky.social · 24/06/2026
3. Gino admitted that she had made claims about an "exonerating file"... but then refused to admit or deny basic facts about that file, including whether it is in her possession. Yes, the very file that, according to Lawrence Lessig's podcast, "exonerates her" and that "HBS missed".
230
Quentin André @quentinandre.bsky.social · 24/06/2026
2. Contrary to Gino's argument that she was outlawyered and limited to two advisors, HBS says that she was, from the beginning, assisted by a team of attorneys "experienced in representing respondents in research misconduct cases".
130
Quentin André @quentinandre.bsky.social · 24/06/2026
HBS' latest filing in the Gino lawsuit contains a few new details: 1. A committee of 26 professors, admins, and fellows reviewed the allegations, and *unanimously concluded* that there was *clear and convincing evidence* of research misconduct.

excellent piece, and should be required reading for anyone skeptical of the technical capabilities and policy implications of AI. there are certainly exceptions, but by and large, the political left is currently treating what should be a five-alarm fire like a distasteful spectator sport.

The left is missing out on AI
As a movement, it has largely refused to engage seriously with AI, ceding debate about a threat and opportunity to the right

Many of them actually. Top of mind because I re-read them yesterday): Nickerson 98 on confirmation bias, Klayman and Ha 87 on hypothesis testing. Just because there is a lot of nonsense doesn't mean the field hasn't generated useful knowledge.

After a popular psychological manipulation turns out to be non-replicable (e.g., "in a seemingly unrelated task" behavioral priming interventions), it is always fun to go back and find the papers who reported "p < 10e-8" effects. No, wait, it's not fun actually.
