Their formula. The monsters don’t hit as a fictional stand in for xyz minority because they’re all sick-ass Toriyama designs. Musical themes are used and re-used because they are, unfortunately, really goddamn good. And the gameplay formula just works. Every time.

with each new entry. Pokémon is sort of stuck in the past, but each generation has a new big gimmick. Dragon Quest just keeps chugging along. I also don’t think they’re like, that morally iffy - they’re inspired by fairy tales and mythology, and never challenged those tropes when they got into

I think the reason it’s so striking to me is that the gameplay has remained so similar. Spelled names, classes, monster and NPC design have all been remarkably consistent for forty years. This isn’t to say I think this is bad - love the games! - but it’s interesting. Final Fantasy zigs and zags

You’re always fighting for the status quo - things have always been peaceful until recently, when They showed up. The kings and queens you meet are generally good leaders, unless being bamboozled by a monster. A bad leader is because they specifically were bad or raised bad.

Playing Dragon Quest V (good game!) and it’s really striking me how the DQ games are one of the most lowercase-c conservative franchises in gaming. Each game is about a group of monsters waging war against humanity. They’re lead by a scheming Demon Lord, who opposes a righteous and loving deity
