Designing software that agents can operate and designing software that incorporates / embeds agents are two very different engineering problems, and I'm convinced that the former is the more durable long-term investment for infrastructure projects.

okay so this anecdote in Margaret's obituary has me crying because this is exactly what it's like being in tech and trying to anticipate failures and having men basically tell you you're being hysterical and then you have to fix it later
"the Lauren error": One day, her daughter Lauren, then four years old, was playing with the command module simulator at the
Instrumentation Lab when she somehow activated a pre-launch program, called P01, while the simulator was in midflight - which
crashed the simulator altogether. Hamilton created a program add-on in the technical documentation warning users not to launch P01 during flight.
She also proposed a software fix to prevent the error happening during a real mission, but she was overruled on the grounds that the highly trained astronauts were never going to make that same mistake. Yet during the Apollo 8 mission in 1968, that's exactly what happened: Jim Lovell inadvertently launched P01 during the flight, causing the on-flight navigational data to vanish. Hamilton and her team were called in to solve the error, and after that her proposed changes were integrated into the program. This was an early example of "defensive" programming, the

Open source but not open contribution makes sense imo. The act of opening a PR used to carry a burden of labor that is now trivial. And when you know the codebase better than anyone and care about the outcome more than anyone, why would you not just do it yourself?

I've noticed lately that many of the Rust evangelists I come across online are... frontend devs? Ha. I'm no hater, I love what Rust has done for systems programming. But also, as a former embedded engineer, watching people discover structs like they were unearthed from an ancient temple is amusing.

A few pics from my runs along the creek this week. The bobcat was chasing a little rabbit -- so I either deprived it of a meal or saved the rabbit's life, depending on how you want to look at it. 🙃 #runsky #kansas

One thing I really miss about the time before cell phones is being able to sit in a waiting room without listening to people have full ass conversations or watching weird videos super loud on their phones. Bring a book or sit there awkwardly waiting like everyone else you assholes.

Gotta laugh when I see a tech company boasting about how great their culture is, and I check their org chart and see... 20 male software engineers who look like they could plausibly be related. I mean, yes, your "culture" certainly produced something, but it's not what you think. 😑

4/ Although I'm not particularly sad to see the culture change ("sponsor me", "buy my course", "come to my talk"), a lot of infrastructure we build on was paid for by attention. If agents intermediate that away, the future looks like #OSS that is unfunded & maintained by agents themselves.

3/ I do think we're losing something valuable. Watching genuinely good educators step back is sad. And I can certainly sympathize with the devs seeing years of specialized expertise become less economically valuable.

2/ Meanwhile, someone using the same boring stack for years could feel weirdly antiquated. AI is definitely changing this. The constant FOMO around tools, frameworks, libraries, etc. is... dead? Or at least it has pivoted to AI.

1/ For a long time, #webdev had this bizarre tendency to treat technology selection itself as some kind of engineering achievement. Which is why so many were able to build careers around having exquisitely informed opinions abt bundlers, or whatever niche / new thing. nolanlawson.com/2026/08/23/t...

(5/5) This is how I run my own projects, and honestly my workflow hasn't changed much from the "olden days." I still spend 90% of my time up front on the requirements and V&V, so that the code generation step is trivial.

(4/5) The same idea maps onto agentic workflows. A model samples from a huge space of plausible outputs, conditioned on whatever context you give it. More constraints = less variance. The solution isn't to "prompt more better." It's to reduce the dimensionality of the problem before generation.

(3/5) Ex. under the DO-178C, every line is wrapped up in formal process (or bureaucracy, whatever). Requirements traceability, DALs, tests written from the requirements, coverage you had to prove, etc. You don't start writing code until you know how you'll prove that it's correct.

(2/5) The avionics codebase I worked on had millions of lines. No single person could understand the whole system, and no one needed to, because intent lived outside the code. Most bad implementations were literally unrepresentable. It was really, really hard to ship bad code.

(1/5) "But the most productive software creators will be ... directing AIs, creating harnesses, and software factories, and QA and verification systems ..." A lot of folks in the industry may not like it, but I think Dix is right here. pauldix.com/the-end-of-p...
