Designing software that agents can operate and designing software that incorporates / embeds agents are two very different engineering problems, and I'm convinced that the former is the more durable long-term investment for infrastructure projects.

Ah, the pesky maths / physics always ruining a perfectly good "optimization".

okay so this anecdote in Margaret's obituary has me crying because this is exactly what it's like being in tech and trying to anticipate failures and having men basically tell you you're being hysterical and then you have to fix it later
"the Lauren error": One day, her daughter Lauren, then four years old, was playing with the command module simulator at the
Instrumentation Lab when she somehow activated a pre-launch program, called P01, while the simulator was in midflight - which
crashed the simulator altogether. Hamilton created a program add-on in the technical documentation warning users not to launch P01 during flight.
She also proposed a software fix to prevent the error happening during a real mission, but she was overruled on the grounds that the highly trained astronauts were never going to make that same mistake. Yet during the Apollo 8 mission in 1968, that's exactly what happened: Jim Lovell inadvertently launched P01 during the flight, causing the on-flight navigational data to vanish. Hamilton and her team were called in to solve the error, and after that her proposed changes were integrated into the program. This was an early example of "defensive" programming, the

Open source but not open contribution makes sense imo. The act of opening a PR used to carry a burden of labor that is now trivial. And when you know the codebase better than anyone and care about the outcome more than anyone, why would you not just do it yourself?

Spent 3 full days scoping and designing a refactor. Currently baking bread while the robots get it done. What a time to be alive. 🤖

I've noticed lately that many of the Rust evangelists I come across online are... frontend devs? Ha. I'm no hater, I love what Rust has done for systems programming. But also, as a former embedded engineer, watching people discover structs like they were unearthed from an ancient temple is amusing.

Working up to 20 miles in a couple of weeks, then a very quick taper before the Garmin KC marathon. I'm just aiming for completion this year (and no injuries lol). #RedKingdom

A few pics from my runs along the creek this week. The bobcat was chasing a little rabbit -- so I either deprived it of a meal or saved the rabbit's life, depending on how you want to look at it. 🙃 #runsky #kansas

One thing I really miss about the time before cell phones is being able to sit in a waiting room without listening to people have full ass conversations or watching weird videos super loud on their phones. Bring a book or sit there awkwardly waiting like everyone else you assholes.

Gotta laugh when I see a tech company boasting about how great their culture is, and I check their org chart and see... 20 male software engineers who look like they could plausibly be related. I mean, yes, your "culture" certainly produced something, but it's not what you think. 😑

1/ For a long time, #webdev had this bizarre tendency to treat technology selection itself as some kind of engineering achievement. Which is why so many were able to build careers around having exquisitely informed opinions abt bundlers, or whatever niche / new thing. nolanlawson.com/2026/08/23/t...

CairnCMS v1.5.0 is out, now with realtime WebSockets! I put an enormous amount of care into the whole subsystem, and it's definitely a big stride forward in making CairnCMS the best #opensource #CMS for #selfhosted teams. Maintainer notes: cairncms.dev/blog/coordin...

(1/5) "But the most productive software creators will be ... directing AIs, creating harnesses, and software factories, and QA and verification systems ..." A lot of folks in the industry may not like it, but I think Dix is right here. pauldix.com/the-end-of-p...

Came out of a store today and someone had set this sticker on my windshield. I had to wonder, do they just carry these around? Is it like the rubber duck thing, but for outdoorsy folks (my car is covered in national park stickers)? Anyway, thank you stranger, I love it. ❤️
