In my essay for @qianawhitted.bsky.social Desegregating Comics, I wrote a little ab Emmett Till as a comics reader. The bed he was in when he was kidnapped was piled with comics and magazines; one of his Chicago neighbors said a bit about his comics reading. He was a kid. He should still be here.

I was not expecting Cross to be so good. Loved the dynamic between these two and the way DC shows up. The dinner party (ep5?) felt like a bizarre mistake but Alex’s roadtrip with his son more than made up for it… loved the whole family. Hoping we get a S2! #tvsky

My newest work is a short hybrid comic-poem, BALLAD FOR BLACK CASSANDRA. It's a personal meditation on internalizing violence and the limits of saving people. You can buy the PDF via my itch & gumroad stores: oliveoilcorp.itch.io/ballad-for-b... oliveoilcorp.gumroad.com/l/ballad
Comic cover rendered in blue and orange hues. The title of the comic is BALLAD FOR BLACK CASSANDRA, written and drawn by Olivia Stephens. The cover illustration features a Black person with short coiled hair standing in waist high water and staring upwards with an orange glint reflecting in their eyes. The sky features a harsh, dramatic orange texture.Comic page rendered in blue and orange tones. A Black woman stands in the middle of towering trees with large holes in their trunks. She wears a sheer slip dress and looks up at the orange sky. Above her are the words THE SKY HAS A CRACK IN IT.Comic page rendered in orange and blue tones. A shot looking up at an angry-looking sky that almost looks split down the middle. The shot is framed by a pair of damaged trees. The next panel shows thick droplets running down a harsh cloudy-looking texture. The text reads:

A big gaping wound right there, in the middle.
It leaks.Comic page rendered in orange and blue tones. The first panel shows a Black woman staring upwards through a dense thicket of branches with burned leaves. Orange light is reflected in her eyes. The second panel shows the same woman now huddled under a tree with a young girl, clutching her head to her chest as thick orange droplets rain down around them. The text reads "It's been leaking on Me and Mine since I can remember." The third panel is a closeup of the woman's face as the droplets make contact and burn her skin. The text reads "The leaking Water is acidic. It burns Me."
