This is key to surfacing use cases for automation (AI or otherwise): Start with tasks that people can't, won't, or shouldn't do. (If it fits "dull / repetitive / predictable" or "dull / dirty / dangerous" then it's probably a winner.)

So for now, all they can do is Play The Part. If they do that long enough, maybe -- maybe! -- everything sorts itself out and The Big Magic Use Case delivers on their grand promises. But the minute they stop acting, the bill comes due. And they're nowhere near able to pay it off.

It's the fear that they'll lose control over the narrative. The fear that maybe genAI isn't quite what they've played it up to be. The fear that, any day now, buyers will demand results that match up with the hype. And then what?

As for the founders: at first I saw their disconnect from reality as simply living too far in the future. (I wrote about this in January 2025: newsletter.complex-machinery.com/archive/027-... ) But since then I've come to see something else: fear.

The fans believe it to be true because they very much want a world in which it is true. Some are execs desperate for the next silver bullet. (The same story that's played out for cloud, mobile, Big Data, ...) Others see genAI as the key to some magic world in which work(ers) disappear.

This thread by @ganeumann.bsky.social is worth a read. Every post. Concerning this post in particular: I think the genAI founders know full well they are playing a part. But the die-hard genAI fans? They think it's real. These groups feed off of each other. For now.
