happy pumpkin season! (art from 2014)
a black and white scratchboard drawing. Alternative poster for "It's the great pumpkin, Charlie brown"
It depicts a vast pumpkin patch in which Linus is standing holding a sign. He is looking up at the full moon. In front of the full moon we can see Snoopy in his aviator costume on his doghouse.
All the way in the distance, there is a house and we can see three children in halloween costumes coming out the door.

Andrey Surnov's concept work for Jusant in my brain again this morning. Can't think of a game set among ruins that made me more desperate to see more of its world. So few games manage such an original and rich aesthetic, so sad the team never got to make more.

Hoshi-wajo standing wooden statue. 11th century, Japan. The wooden flesh of his forehead and nose splits open like a parting curtain, unveiling the calm, serene face of a Bodhisattva emerging from within the mortal shell. In his right hand, raised in a gentle gesture of instruction
Carved from a single block of timber, a monk standing in solemn monastic robes reveals a miraculous inner metamorphosis through a deep vertical cleft down the center of his head and face. The wooden flesh of his forehead and nose splits open like a parting curtain, unveiling the calm, serene face of a Bodhisattva emerging from within the mortal shell. In his right hand, raised in a gentle gesture of instruction, and his left hand, holding a slender ritual water vase (suibin), the figure exudes a quiet, poised presence. The aged surface of the sculpture is etched with deep vertical wood grain, tool marks, and age-worn fissures that catch dramatic, directional light, capturing the physical tension between the outer human countenance and the divine radiance hidden within.
Dating to 11th-century Heian-period Japan, this extraordinary wooden sculpture depicts Hōshō Wajō (the Chinese monk Baozhi, 418–514 CE), a renowned Buddhist master of the Southern Liang Dynasty celebrated for his eccentric wisdom and miraculous deeds. According to Japanese Buddhist folklore recorded in collections such as the Konjaku Monogatarishū, when Emperor Wu of Liang sent court painters to capture the monk's portrait, Baozhi used his fingers to rend open the skin of his face, revealing the Eleven-Headed Guanyin (Jūichimen Kannon) beneath to demonstrate that true Buddhahood cannot be captured by superficial physical likeness. Sculpted in the ichiboku-zukuri (single-block wood carving) technique, this work represents a pinnacle of Japanese religious monozukuri (artisanal mastery), translating a literary legend of spiritual transfiguration into a startling, physical masterpiece of sacred art.

Black Cat Looking Straight Ahead by contemporary Japanese artist Toshiyuki Enoki (born 1961).
Positioned squarely in the center of a heavily textured, antiqued golden ground, a jet-black cat sits in erect, motionless composure, staring directly out at the viewer. Its dense dark coat is rendered with meticulous, micro-fine brushwork, giving tactile softness to the chest and ears while contrasting sharply against the coarse, woven grain of the underlying substrate. Two large, luminous amber eyes—framed by thin golden irises and wide, dilated pupils—glow with unblinking intensity, serving as the sole vibrant point of light within the ink-dark silhouette. At the base, a single tail curls smoothly outward across the muted canvas, while in the lower left corner, a bright vermilion and yellow circular seal bearing the artist's mark anchors the lower register.
Painted by contemporary artist Toshiyuki Enoki (born 1961), this work continues Japan’s long-standing painterly fascination with feline mystery, drawing a direct lineage from Hishida Shunshō’s iconic 1910 Nihonga masterpiece Black Cat (Kuroki Neko) and the whimsical cats of Utagawa Kuniyoshi. Enoki, trained in traditional Nihonga (Japanese-style painting) techniques, silk painting, and lacquer restoration, employs a distinctive technique involving natural mineral pigments (iwanogu), gold leaf, and layered glazes on textured canvas or hemp paper. His unique monozukuri (artisanal mastery) fuses traditional Japanese material culture with surreal, otherworldly sensibilities, transforming a domestic subject into a timeless, talismanic icon that feels both ancient and modern.

Cover illustration for a magazine called “Metro Guide” being distributed thought metro stations in Tokyo from September 2017.
Riding away along a glistening, stone-paved lane (ishidatami), a solitary cyclist moves beneath an arching canopy of autumn maple leaves (momiji) blazing in brilliant shades of crimson, rust, and orange. To the left, traditional timber townhouses (machiya) border the path, their dark wooden facades outfitted with hanging shop curtains (noren) and subtle lanterns. Along the curb, wild pampas grass (susuki) bends gently in the crisp air, while fresh rainwater pooling on the wet flagstones reflects the bright sky and fiery foliage like sheets of stained glass. Created as the cover illustration for the free publication Metro Guide, distributed across Tokyo metro stations starting in September 2017, this piece reimagines the historical genre of meisho-e (pictures of famous views) through a contemporary watercolor lens. Designed to encourage urban commuters to pause and rediscover seasonal beauty within and beyond the capital, the artwork bridges graphic publishing with classical landscape sensibilities.

A Character sheet of artist's Star Trek OC Klingon chief engineer of USS Celeste, lt cmdr Egon Himmet.
Left: Egon is wearing her hair in a messy braid, her sleeves of her Starfleet uniform is rolled up. She has a pair of welding goggles pulled up over her forehead, which she's holding in place with her left hand. She's wearing a pair of brown working gloves and a yellow jumpsuit overall over her uniform, the top half f which is undone and wrapped around her waist with dangling sleeves. Her Klingon crest is slightly visible through the pile of clothes. In her right hand, she has a frill machine. She has two golden and one black pip.

Top right: Egon is holed up in a circular jefferie's tube in a side profile shot, washed in purple is light. She's tapping on her PADD. her klingon sash/utility belt is partially visible.

Happy #StarTrekDay! Here's to Star Trek: Lower Decks, the show that turned me from a casual Trek viewer into a full on Trekkie. I love vintage things, so I wanted to make a tribute in the style of retro comics, it's the 60th anniversary after all! #StarTrekLowerDecks #lowerdecks #StarTrek
A drawing of the main characters of the show Star Trek: Lower decks in the style of 1960's paper print comics. It looks slightly aged due to the paper texture. From left to right: Lieutenant Junior Grades Beckett Mariner, Brad Boimler, Sam Rutherford, D'Vana Tendi and T'lyn. They have sort of formed a human train walking down the corridor of the USS Cerritos.
Mariner is closest to the camera, she is pulling Boimler by his arm, which is over her shoulder and smiling, looking back at her friends. Right behind her is Boimler, his right arm over Mariner's shoulder as he's being dragged forward by her. He's looking behind his shoulder and grinning widely as he shouts some thing at Rutherford, Tendi and T'Lyn. Next in line iis Rutherford, who's smiling widely and has a hand on Boimler's shoulder. His left arm is linked with Tendi's right, who is linking her other arm with T'Lyn's and dragging her along. Tendi looks cheery and shouts back at Boimler. At the end of the conga line is T'Lyn, who is being dragged along by T'Lyn. Her expression says she's not against it. T'Lyn is holding a PADD in her left hand, suggesting she was mid work when this impromptu human train formed. They are walking past a large window, and through the glass you can see the passing nebula.

Published in the 1982 JCA (Japan Creators Association) Annual 4, this evocative illustration by Nakajima Kiyoshi (b. 1943) stands as a quintessential modern reinvention of the bijin-ga (pictures of beautiful women) genre
esting her head in quiet contemplation against a weathered timber rail, a young woman leans into a winter gale, her dark hair and heavy garment delicately dusted with falling snowflakes. Her flowing dark kimono—patterned with fine, undulating dotted lines that mirror the rhythmic movement of wind and ocean currents—is anchored by the sharp, dynamic pop of a bright crimson sash trailing in the breeze. Nakajima masterfully employs a vast expanse of unblemished white snow (yohaku) to isolate the figure, guiding the viewer's eye toward the spindly, leafless trees on the horizon and a cold, sweeping sky rendered in layered, atmospheric strokes of cobalt and indigo ink wash. Celebrated throughout the late Shōwa period for his nostalgic, emotionally resonant imagery, Nakajima bridges classical Japanese sensitivities with modern illustrative flair. The composition captures a profound sense of mono no aware—the bittersweet pathos of impermanence—where the figure's quiet, solitary posture stands in poignant dialogue with the biting chill and vast, unyielding beauty of the winter landscape.

This artwork is titled Jealousy (嫉妬), created around 1923 by the Japanese fantasy and occult painter Tachibana Sayume (1892–1970)
Created around 1923 by Tachibana Sayume (1892–1970), Jealousy (Jitto, 嫉妬) stands as a haunting masterpiece of Taishō Roman decadence, seamlessly merging Japanese folklore with the linear sensuality of Western Symbolism and Aubrey Beardsley–inspired illustration. The composition depicts two women seated in quiet, phantom-like confrontation over a wooden ban-sugoroku (traditional backgammon) board, illuminated from between by the dim, eerie light of a tall floor lamp. While their physical postures remain poised and restrained, the true emotional furnace of the artwork erupts above them in a subterranean storm of ink.

The primary visual driver of the piece is the extraordinary torrent of long, unconfined black hair (kurokami) surging upward from both figures. In Japanese folklore and classical literature, unbinding hair frequently functions as an extension of the psyche—a physical manifestation of suppressed obsession, resentment, and the unseen spirit (ikiryō). Sayume renders these tresses with obsessive, rhythmic precision, turning strands of hair into wild, serpentine currents that intertwine across the dark, stippled background. The hair becomes an atmospheric cloud of shared turmoil, translating the internal toxicity of jealousy into an overwhelming graphic force that envelops the upper half of the frame.

Beneath this wild canopy, the subtle details of the setting deepen the psychological narrative. The game of ban-sugoroku serves as a poignant metaphor for strategic rivalry and the emotional gambles of love, where fate and calculated moves collide. Sartorially, Sayume contrasts the two rivals through seasonal textile motifs rendered with intricate kanoko shibori (dapple-dye) fill patterns: the figure on the left wears a kimono adorned with falling autumn maple leaves (momiji), while the woman on the right is clad in spring cherry blossoms (sakura).

black and white scratchboard illustration depicting a circular room in three point down-up perspective - around the room are circular pillars holding up a balcony. High above the room, an ornate dome. In the center of the room, dozens of silver bars of varying heights, some reaching to the ceiling, some a few inches high, are arranged almost like an organ.
