Trump's must-run orders have prevented several fossil fuel power plants from closing, costing ratepayers hundreds of millions of dollars, even though those plants are barely running, because their power is not economic. A pure example of large public cost for narrow private benefit.

POLITICO Pro: Trump rescued these fossil fuel power plants. Americans are paying for it.
The must-run orders have kept alive aging generators that are costly to run — and produce plenty of pollution.

23,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 joules. That’s the amount of heat the oceans absorbed in 2025. A number so huge it’s almost meaningless…until you realise it’s roughly 40× humanity’s annual energy use. The ocean is buying us time. We’re running out of it. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

A generator converts motion to electricity. A turbine converts fluid motion to mechanical motion. Turbines are used in cars and jet engines. The wheel and blades on a windmill is a turbine. A water wheel is a turbine. Most old "windmills" were used to pump water. It's a silly thing to argue about.

I'm pretty sure trump uses it to bait people. I just think it's unproductive to have these semantic arguments. I wish reporters would ask follow ups questions like "Iowa produces 60% of their electricity from windmills, do you think that makes them losers?"

pzdubs.bsky.social @pzdubs.bsky.social · 03/08/2026
A turbine converts fluid motion into mechanical motion. The mechanical equipment inside the nacelle can be called a mill as it's a bunch of machinery producing something(electricity ). Arguing about it is all wasted breath IMO. No one goes around saying Akshully it's a steel plant, not a steel mill.

Data centers are like resource extraction. A lot of temporary jobs to get the infrastructure in place. Then a handful to keep it going. 95% of the time is spent sucking up massive amounts of local land, energy and water to create profits for people hundreds or thousands of miles away.
