So now that I'm finally watching Reacher, I have to ask: does anyone else think this guy is a LOT like Murderbot? Specifically, Alexander Skarsgard as Murderbot. But also not not the Murderbot of the books.

Just finished a Huck Finn reread in anticipation of finally reading Percival Everett's "James." And I have to say, the book is NOT titled "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn." It is titled "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn." This drives me UP THE WALL every time.

The number of people in the comments who are calling Elizabeth Bishop a terrible writer. Oh save me from yelling at people about "The Fish" before the workday even begins.

To my friends from LiveJournal

I still think about you Wonder if you finally quit, Do you still speak to your mom?

I remember when you went to Japan How you swore you'd never forgive him.

I can't remember to take my meds but I remember you wanted to live on a houseboat. It's a strange intimacy, all of us unspooling across decades of internet space Like balls of yarn leaving a trail behind us of everywhere and everyone we've ever been

I hope you got your houseboat.

I hope you got everything.

When we were unionizing our charter school network (we won!), one thing I read and used in our campaign was the idea that unions are little-d democratic. They bring people who have nothing in common together to negotiate for better working conditions. They strengthen community through diversity!

Saw an amazing Strega Nona tattoo and it got me thinking what children's book I would want a tattoo of. And obviously it would be Madeline. Obviously the illustration where she lifts her shirt to show off her scars to her schoolmates. I am a poet, you see.
Illustration from Madeline by Ludwig Bemelmans that shows Madeline, a little girl, standing on her hospital bed and pulling her shirt up to show off her appendectomy scar to 11 other little girls in schoolgirl hats and coats.

I mean, honestly, even in the 90s very few of my friends actually read the whole book, even if it was assigned. I was the weirdo for insisting on reading books, cover to cover, as a matter of course.

A lot of people who’ve posted that “I don’t know how to explain that you should care about other people” quote need to know that they should care about other people. I want my tax dollars to go to paying for insulin for the most vile MAGA asshole you ever heard of; that’s part of “everyone”.

Not Horses

By Natalie Shapero

What I adore is not horses, with their modern
domestic life span of 25 years. What I adore
is a bug that lives only one day, especially if
it’s a terrible day, a day of train derailment or
chemical lake or cop admits to cover-up, a day
when no one thinks of anything else, least of all
that bug. I know how it feels, born as I’ve been
into these rotting times, as into sin. Everybody’s
busy, so distraught they forget to kill me,
and even that won’t keep me alive. I share
my home not with horses, but with a little dog
who sees poorly at dusk and menaces stumps,
makes her muscle known to every statue.
I wish she could have a single day of   language,
so that I might reassure her don’t be afraid —
our whole world is dead and so can do you no harm.

In 2025 (less than 30 days away), PayPal will start selling your transaction history for targeted advertising. I very highly recommend logging into your account and going to Settings > Data & Privacy > Personalized Shopping. If you're reading this, turn that off RIGHT NOW before you forget.
A screenshot of PayPal's terms of service. Big wall of legalese text, which I will be pasting in below. You don't need to read it, here's the important part:

"The key update to the Privacy Statement explains how we will share information with merchants to personalize your shopping experience and recommend our services to you. Personal information we disclose includes, for example, products, preferences, sizes, and styles we think you’ll like. Information gathered about you after the effective date of our updated Privacy Statement, November 27, 2024, will be shared with participating stores where you shop."

Here's the whole paragraph:

We are updating our Privacy Statement to explain how, starting early Summer 2025, we will share information to help improve your shopping experience and make it more personalized for you. The key update to the Privacy Statement explains how we will share information with merchants to personalize your shopping experience and recommend our services to you. Personal information we disclose includes, for example, products, preferences, sizes, and styles we think you’ll like. Information gathered about you after the effective date of our updated Privacy Statement, November 27, 2024, will be shared with participating stores where you shop, unless you live in California, North Dakota, or Vermont. For PayPal customers in California, North Dakota, or Vermont, we’ll only share your information with those merchants if you tell us to do so. No matter where you live, you’ll always be able to exercise your right to opt out of this data sharing by updating your preference settings in your account under “Data and Privacy.”

If we're talking Jesse Helms, I have to use this opportunity to share Audre Lorde's absolute filthiest diss track ever, her 1991 poem "jessehelms" Written after Helms pushed through a ban on "homoeroticism" for US government arts funding, blocking queer artists' grants & citing Lorde as example.
jessehelms

I am a Black woman
writing my way to the future
off a garbage scow knit from moral fiber
stuck together with jessehelms’
come where Art is a dirty word
scrawled on the wall
of Bilbo’s memorial outhouse
and obscenity is catching
even I’d like to hear you scream
ream out your pussy
with my dildo called Nicaragua
ram Grenada up your fighole
till Panama runs out of you
like Savimbi aflame.

But you prefer to do it
on the senate floor
amid a sackful of paper pricks
keeping time to a 195 million dollar
military band
safe-sex dripping from your tongue
into avid senatorial ears.Later you’ll get yours
behind the senate toilets
where they’re waiting for you jessehelms
those white boys with their pendulous rules
bumping against the rear door of Europe
spread-eagled across the globe
their crystal balls poised over Africa
ass-up for old glory.

Your turn now jessehelms
come on its time
to lick the handwriting
off the walls.

Instead of writing during my writing hours, I am making art. This is Bingo Robot, a character conceived by my then-five-year-old son and made real by me, a 43-year-old woman with a shredded ability to focus.
Image of a paper cut out robot with an football shaped head, wire antennae, claws for hands, and all his joints are made with eyelets so he is posable.
