So now that I'm finally watching Reacher, I have to ask: does anyone else think this guy is a LOT like Murderbot? Specifically, Alexander Skarsgard as Murderbot. But also not not the Murderbot of the books.

See, Tom Sawyer is "The Adventures ..." because that book covers all of his adventures. But Huck only gets "Adventures" because at the end, he lights out of the territories and obviously has more. So we have only read SOME of his adventures.

Just finished a Huck Finn reread in anticipation of finally reading Percival Everett's "James." And I have to say, the book is NOT titled "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn." It is titled "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn." This drives me UP THE WALL every time.

The number of people in the comments who are calling Elizabeth Bishop a terrible writer. Oh save me from yelling at people about "The Fish" before the workday even begins.

To my friends from LiveJournal

I still think about you Wonder if you finally quit, Do you still speak to your mom?

I remember when you went to Japan How you swore you'd never forgive him.

I can't remember to take my meds but I remember you wanted to live on a houseboat. It's a strange intimacy, all of us unspooling across decades of internet space Like balls of yarn leaving a trail behind us of everywhere and everyone we've ever been

I hope you got your houseboat.

I hope you got everything.

Thank you "10 Things I Hate About You"!
Quiz question: 1. Choose the word nearest the oppositei meaning of "turgid":

Unions negotiate--they do not compromise. Let us take more lessons from the union tradition! No more compromising to embiggen the party when we know that will not work. Instead, negotiate so all people under your big tent get things they need.

So, like, the Democratic party's insistence on throwing trans people under the bus is a way of compromising, or insisting people comrpomise--to make a bigger tent?--not of negotiating with diverse people to find a solution that satisfies all.

As a side note, this got me thinking about the difference between negotiation and compromise vis a vis the Democratic party. I once learned that in negotiation, everyone comes out satisfied. But with compromise, everyone comes out disappointed.

A knock-on effect of the decline of unions is an increase in isolation and distrust. As unions lose power and members, fewer and fewer people have experience with what it means to be under the big tent, sharing space with people of all types.

When we were unionizing our charter school network (we won!), one thing I read and used in our campaign was the idea that unions are little-d democratic. They bring people who have nothing in common together to negotiate for better working conditions. They strengthen community through diversity!

Saw an amazing Strega Nona tattoo and it got me thinking what children's book I would want a tattoo of. And obviously it would be Madeline. Obviously the illustration where she lifts her shirt to show off her scars to her schoolmates. I am a poet, you see.
Illustration from Madeline by Ludwig Bemelmans that shows Madeline, a little girl, standing on her hospital bed and pulling her shirt up to show off her appendectomy scar to 11 other little girls in schoolgirl hats and coats.

I mean, honestly, even in the 90s very few of my friends actually read the whole book, even if it was assigned. I was the weirdo for insisting on reading books, cover to cover, as a matter of course.

The Employee Who Glued All the Mugs to the Break Room Floor

Apparently I wasn't laid off. I just "participated" in the Reduction in Force (RIF) "process."
Screenshot of this horrible slideshow explaining the layoffs that affected 15% of staff at my educational publishing job. It reads: "01 Rehire Eligibility: Your participation in the Reduction in Force (RIF) process does not negatively impact your eligibility to be rehired by [name redacted]. well, he spilled it across the big lab-table thingie in front of the chalkboard, so he didn't have to bend. probably some chalk got away from him and he pretended that didn't happen either!

Also fairly certain that from one Friday to the next Thursday, he gave literally the same lecture. LIke he opened his notes to the wrong page and never realized at all his error.

I had Dr. Barker as an undergrad! We once watched him knock a gallon-sized bucket of chalk over while lecturing and and then continuing to lecture while clumsily picking up all the chalk--never once breaking rhythm or acknowledging what happened. (I tell this story OFTEN when college comes up.)

Sometimes Bingo also fights bad guys.
Panel of "Bingo Robot Cuts Down Trees," featuring Bingo wearing a suit of armor with a feather at the top of his helmet, swinging his axe. He is fighting Annie Oakley, who is shooting a pistol that has one of those flag thingies that comes out. They are battling in front of a bank, an apartment building, and a flower shop. The words read, "Bingo wears armor when he's fighting against the bad guy."

This picture washed out the title--it looks better in person! "Bingo Robot Cuts Down Trees" is only half about cutting down trees.
One panel of "Bingo Robot Cuts Down Trees," featuring Bingo swinging his axe at a tree. The tree is mostly green, but the branch falling down is in gray-scale. The words read, "Sometimes Bingo cuts trees down when they're a little alive and a little dead."
