I like to study ancient toilets, privies, and fecal deposits. You can't lie in your poops! I also study textiles & pottery. Not interested in romance, because straight men killed it for me. (Archeologist, Retired Farmer, Political/Economic Risk Analyst)

I told everyone to get in the car. We were going to the beach. We got some pumpkins on the way home. It was a good day.

#TilesOnTuesday Despite echoing Temple Church's medieval origins, Minton tiles from Victorian restoration not always appreciated. After WWII London bombing, Inner Temple's treasurer said: "To have got rid of their.... hideous encaustic tiles.... will be almost a blessing in disguise." ALT for more
Temple district in London was bombed 10 May 1941. Damage across the area was horrific and repairs to Temple Church took 17 years to complete. Probably much to dismay of Inner Temple treasurer, hundreds of Victorian Minton tiles were retained, but they were installed up in the less public clerestory gallery of the Round - the original early medieval structure.
From Temple Church website:
"Sir Frank MacKinnon (Treasurer of Inner Temple in 1945) compiled a report in 1944 which reveals how far and fast taste had changed since the nineteenth-century refurbishments. For my own part, seeing how dreadfully the Church had been despoiled by its pretended friends a century before, I do not grieve so very acutely for the havoc now wrought by its avowed enemies …. If the Church is now once again truly restored, it can hardly fail to be far more beautiful than the Victorian vandals made it for us. To have got rid of their awful stained glass windows, their ghastly pulpit, their hideous encaustic tiles, their abominable pews and seats (on which alone they spent over £10,000), will be almost a blessing in disguise. An ancient text about the first Temple may even, I hope, be apposite. ‘The latter glory of this house shall be greater than the former, saith the Lord of Hosts: and in this place will I give peace, saith the Lord of Hosts.’

Caprid Rhyton lapis lazuli, gold c. 500 BCE Achaemenid Persia #handmade #carved #lapislazuli #stone #gold #caprid #horned #animal #rhyton #chalice #goblet #Achemenid #Persia #culture #ancientart #art #ancient #politics #power #empire #imperial #image #propaganda #display #wealth #ancientpersia
Riton in lapislazuli e oro
Collection: Abegg-Stiftung - Achemenid Persia • 5th century
BC
Carved in the deep blue of lapislazzuli and adorned with gold details, this rhyton takes on the form of a powerful caprid, depicted in a collected pose as the body of the vase rises behind its shoulders. The contrast between the intense stone and the luster of gold returns an object of extraordinary elegance, designed to combine ritual function and strong visual impact.
Rhyta like this were used during libations and ceremonial banquets in the royal courts of ancient Persia. The gesture of pouring and drinking became part of a symbolic choreography, in which the vessel was not just a container, but a means between the earthly power, the sacred and the natural world. The animal form indicated strength, protection and fertility, central values in the Persian imaginary.
In the Achemenian period (around 550-330 BC), luxury objects played a fundamental role in the representation of imperial power. Precious materials like lapislazzuli - imported from far-flung regions of Central Asia - and gold underscored the empire's breadth and control of trade routes. Rhyta were employed in elite ritual contexts or offered as diplomatic gifts, strengthening hierarchies, alliances and the divine legitimacy of the sovereign.

I generally like Steinbeck's books. He could not write women characters very well. I see it in a lot of male authors. It is like they think we have different emotions. Do you know of a male author who does a good job?

I have a fun mythic (random based D&D). Most of the players are women. They handle a lot of the adventure with diplomacy. The menfolk seem to be really confused as to how to play that.

The other thing to do is to lay on your back, and put your legs up against a wall. Get your butt as close to the wall as possible, and put up your legs. Then push your lower back down into the floor so you can feel it. This stretch builds more strength. try to hold that 10 minutes and work up to 20

Yes, and it does work. It makes you keep your feet on the floor & balancing evenly. That means you engage the point when your pelvis and femur meet. (Horse back riders call it seat bones, if you know that term.) It make the lower back work. Start slow, and set a timer, start at 10 minutes & work up

Request a mail-in ballot. Do not mail it in. I know it is wrong, but walk-in your mail-in ballot. Hand carry it to a secured voter drop off instead of mail-in. Elon was able to fudge things because he made up as many as we mailed in. He made up counties. He neutralized the mail in ballot.

For this #MosaicMonday we look up into the spectacular presbytery vault of San Vitale in #Ravenna. To me, the Ravenna #mosaics are an astonishing collection, the last magnificent product of late antiquity. But whose empire does this shimmering C6 CE ceiling actually represent? #AncientBluesky 🏺
PRESBYTERY VAULT MOSAICS, C. 547 CE. BASILICA OF SAN VITALE, RAVENNA

A view looking straight up into the vaulted ceiling of the presbytery. At the apex within a starry medallion is the Lamb of God. The central wreath is supported by four white robed angels, a visual inheritance from classical winged Victories. They stand upon blue globes, an ancient symbol of cosmic dominion. The vault sections are filled with a lush paradise of acanthus vines and birds, echoing Augustan imagery of abundance. This shared classical vocabulary reflects the complex political reality of C6 CE Ravenna. The basilica was begun under Ostrogothic rule, a regime using Roman art to present themselves as theoretically still part of the empire. When Justinian consecrated the church in c. 547 CE he did not have to replace the Ostrogothic aesthetic. The Gothic kings' official style was already Roman, allowing this final flowering of late antiquity to bridge two competing empires.

This is such a critical comment for the AIP community. Those of us who are forced to cut nightshades from our diet depend on mustard, wasabi, and horseradish for heat in our food. Adding hot peppers contaminates them with allergens. Let us have something, please. You do not need yet anther hot sauce
