The Purple Line is Maryland’s future 16-mile light rail transit system with 21 stations connecting Prince George’s and Montgomery counties.

MTA and Purple Line contractors told the Montgomery County Transportation and Environment Committee the project is over 92% complete, dynamic testing is underway on most of the 16‑mile alignment, and the contractual opening date remains Dec. 30, 2027, though monthly forecasts vary.

MTA and operators told the committee the Purple Line will accept SmartTrip and CharmPass regional fare media and cash; staff said they are working toward open payment (tap‑to‑phone) compatibility with regional systems.

Project leaders said 173 Montgomery County businesses have received $1,960,000 in small business grants since February, with awards up to $50,000; a separate community grants round (Purple Line Beyond the Rails) has a later deadline in 2026.
