"[We are] working alongside Jewish Australians who are fighting genocide, who are speaking up for core values that they hold dear," he said. The fact that Burns thinks this is somehow prejudicial or chilling is actually chilling.

After giving it some serious thought, I've decided to also put my hands up to become the leader of the Australian Greens. Am I a sitting Greens MP? No. I'm not even eligible to sit in federal Parliament; but I think that's a strength. Who better to speak truth to power than someone with no power?

I’m backing Cassian Andor and Leia Organa for co-leadership of the Australian Greens. They bring the right mix of insurgency and establishment to appeal to a large cross-section of voters across the galaxy at a moment like this. Plus, gender balance is crucial.

The ABC analysis on how interest rates will impact renters is woeful: "Some landlords may try to offset the impact of rate rises on their cash flow by raising rents over time, although there are constraints on how often and how much rent can be increased each year in most states." This is wrong.

The RBA just raised rates. It affects more than your home loan
While the RBA's decisions are most felt through mortgage repayments, their impact extends well beyond home loans.

AI isn't a threat because it's intelligent. It's more like giving your toddler super strength and x-ray vision. But also: why was OpenAI doing research into public health expenditure? why did it take so long to notice and/or report the breach? what have they done with the information they accessed?

There's a part in the report about job creation: "Industry estimates suggest that data centre construction has directly and indirectly supported more than 9,000 jobs to date and this could grow by an additional 18,930 jobs through to 2030". except 2/3 of those jobs are in the buildout phase.
a chart showing the jobs created by data centre construction. it shows 4,190 direct and 4,940 indirect jobs from data centre construction. of these, 2980 direct and 3690 indirect jobs are attributed to build out.

Stafford Beer puts it best. "The purpose of a system is what it does. There is no point in claiming that the purpose of a system is to do what it constantly fails to do". Our unemployment system is supposed to be a safety net that supports people to find jobs. In reality, it is a misery farm.

According to the AIHW, in the 22-64 age group, people on income support payments accounted for around 3 in 7 (43%) people who died due to suicide. Even if you ignore the physical health impacts of poverty, our below-poverty payments and punitive mutual obligations systems are killing people.

IDK why people are so shocked about corruption on infrastructure builds; it was literally the subject of a Utopia episode. Season 3 Episode 6: Snouts In The Trough. That episode also features the shocking revelation hat governments could run the builds themselves far more efficiently.

I looked at this data and the incredibly grim Figure 4. This shows suicide rates among unemployment payment recipients dropping in 2020 and rising again in 2021 (middle line) The top line is DSP recipients. Imo that rate increased later than the other payments because PIT changes ended in March 2021

That "AI might kill us all in a few years" shit feels like the same marketing pattern AI companies have been using this whole time. It might kill a bunch of people but not because it gains sentience, but because someone fed it after midnight and it chewed through some vital infrastructure.

Responding to the PHON Superannuation policy with points about retirement savings is a mistake. I personally don't trust the global economy to be in a state to support me in retirement, full stop. Many people don't think they'll live long enough to retire. Retirement savings are irrelevant.
