Pierre Bourdieu once argued that the question of whether something is art isn't answered by the artist's intention or even the object itself. Instead, the quality of being "art" is conferred by a community — curators, dealers, auction houses, audiences, etc. 🧵

Someone on Threads writes: "The Met Gala feels like real dystopian shit.

People can’t afford groceries or gas. But we’re going to celebrate this event which is nothing more than wealth porn."

Putting together a new gaming PC for the theater room & decided to install the HTPC version of Bazzite (Linux) on it instead of Windows. Initial thought: Microsoft should be worried about how far Linux has come. Install/setup was dead easy & things just work.

My latest story is up! The components required for DNA and RNA are all present on asteroid Ryugu, which lends strong support to the hypothesis that the raw ingredients for life were present before the Sun even formed. A very fun and fascinating tale!

NASA isn't why the US doesn't have universal healthcare, or a social safety net. The US doesn't have those things because politicians with the power to provide them choose specifically not to (with varying levels of support from voters). Enthusiasm for human spaceflight doesn't drive that choice.

I see there’s a post about microplastics going around with a photo of drinking straws, so here is my semi-regular reminder that the 3 biggest sources of microplastics are tires (45%), synthetic clothing particles (35%) and paint (~10%). Lay article attached:

pbs.org

One of the biggest microplastic pollution sources isn’t straws or grocery bags – it’s your tires

Every few years, the tires on your car wear thin and need to be replaced. But where does that lost tire material go? The answer, unfortunately, is often waterways, where the tiny microplastic particle...

This is hilarious... I bought an MSI X870 Tomahawk thinking it would be perfect from a PCIe lane layout & NVMe standpoint It is, except the PCIe power connector intrudes on bottom PCIe slot. So I put in a reverse 90. Now my video card doesn't fit. That NVMe is my Steam library. Games or video card

A photo showing the bottom half of an ATX motherboard, with a red arrow pointing at a power connector that MSI decided to locate just millimeters away from the board's bottom PCIe slot. This connector collides with the PCIe M.2 adapter that I was intending to install there.

I moved the M.2 adapter onto a reverse 90° PCIe adapter to solve the power connector clearance issue, but now the M.2 adapter angles up toward the top of the motherboard... which wouldn't be an issue, except it's a few millimeters too tall and now collides with my RTX 4080FE video card.

An RTX 5090FE would fit, but it's not like I can just go out and buy one of those.

Cleaning the kitchen this morning and found a blast from the past: an AMD Athlon 64 IHS! Based on the markings, it's from one of the several 3000+ models I delidded 20 years ago.

AMD Athlon 64 3000+ CPU's IHS (integrated heat spreader). A dull silver-gray looking metal square (nickel plated copper, as I recall), with model number, serial number, and stepping codes laser etched on.
