the cool thing about extremely high butterfly diversity in the Amazon is you inevitably get species or even genus complexes that all look exactly the fucking same

Spiky caterpillar on a hand. The caterpillar has small red and white stripes, with a light blue head. The rest of its body and its numerous spines are all a vivid green, except for the longest spines by the head and rear which are blue

Leaving for Peru tonight!!! I thought a plane-looking moth might be fitting ^^ this is one of many wasp-mimicking tiger moths, with this species mostly likely trying to mimic scoliid wasps! #invertefest #bugsky #inverts #lepidoptera
A vivid, wasp-like moth resting on a large leaf. Its wings, indeed like wasps, are mostly clear, slender in shape, and lack scales, only being present on the wing veins and margins. The head and thorax are lined with vertical and alternating black and yellow stripes, almost inverse to a typical wasp. The most visible part of the moth of the moth is the abdomen; it is mostly covered in metallic dark blue scales, with the exception of six broad yellow spots lined in two columns positioned close to the thorax. Strikingly, the legs and antennae of this moth are a vivid red color contrasting from the rest of the body.

#INVERTEFEST ‼️ Eighty-eight butterflies can be a common sight in Costa Rica and are known for their namesake ventral patterns, but rarely do they expose their beautifully iridescent dorsal wings! #bugsky #butterflies #inverts
A small black butterfly resting on a finger seen from above. Its wings are opened up exposing the dorsal side. On each forewing is a broad vertical band down the middle, lined with iridescent blue scales. A similar spot on each hindwing lines up with each band, and the bands also have a perpendicular line each towards the body. On the edges of the hindwing are a thin row of greenish scales as well. The ventral wings of the same butterfly seen from the side. The wing pattern is completely different; what can be seen of the forewing is banding in order of red, black and white from closest to farthest from the body. The hindwing is mostly white, but lined with black rings, and with scattered red scales where it ends and the forewing begins. Within the black rings are another smaller set of rings that resemble the number “88”, albeit the singles digit pattern moreso resembles a semicolon while the tens digit pattern is closer to the colon symbol that would be seen in the number eight. The butterfly is still resting on a finger, and has a black proboscis seemingly trying to sip at the finger itself.

An underrated and beautiful moth for its small size, appearing dressed in regalia!
A moth on painted white wood among many much smaller insects. The moth’s wings are gray with light brown edges as a base, but a large golden line runs down the middle of the forewing into the hindwing and into a mirrored pattern on the other two wings. The exterior edge of this golden band is silver while the interior edge is black lined with silver. The edges of the hindwing also contain similarly silver spots, with one spot on each hindwing being a vivid red as well. A smaller clone of this golden band is also present only on each forewing in between the larger band and the body.

A moth on a leaf. The wings are mostly brown with a big area lacking scales so it is translucent and the leaf shows through. The thorax has a red crest. There are four yellow spots along the thorax and black and yellow dashed lines along the posterior edge of the forewings.

you yes YOU will appreciate this amblypygid I held ⬇️
A large arachnid on a dirt wall dotted with short leaves. It is uniformally a light black color, and has a rounded prosoma and longer, but still blunt opisthosoma. All four pairs of its legs are long and slender and curve forward, with the first pair taking this to the extreme and floating in the air. The pedipalps are held in front.A closer view of the same arachnid, resting on a hand. The arachnid’s size is much more evident, its average legspan being longer than the hand’s width and the first pair of legs extending far beyond and still flating in the air. Its pedipalps are a bit more visible now showing how they are held horizontally and parallel to the head of the arachnid and vaguely showing the large spikes pointing inwards. The same arachnid on a clothed shoulder, better illuminated and waving its first pair of legs in the air.The same arachnid back in the hand again but zoomed out, showing the full extent of the length of the first legs and the large size of the creature compared to the hand.

A sideview of a large, long but squat katydid resting on a hand. It is a mottled black, brown and grey all over its body. Notably, its forelegs, hindlegs, and pronotum are all jagged with small spikes, and its hindlegs in particular are in a tucked position, readying the katydid to jump. Its thin antennae are extremely long and extend past the photo.

the secret to being a true butterfly fan is appreciating them for all their disgusting weirdness. such as eating bird poop #insects #bugsky #butterflies
A ventral view of an orange butterfly from the side. It is standing on a leaf, and it is sipping at bird scat with its proboscis. The edges of its wings are black and lined with spaced out blue spots. Its fore wing is also almost entirely back minus wavering yellow stripes, while its hindwing is almost entirely orange within the borders. The butterfly’s body is striped black and yellow, while its antennae notably have large, bright yellow club tips. The same butterfly seen from a dorsal view. The general wing color patterns are similar to the ventral side, but the dorsal wing edges do not have any blue spots. There is also a lone orange stripe on each forewing, as well as a small black dash near the edge of each hindwing.

A screenshot of a digital canvas. The canvas has a drawing of a beetle. The beetles head and pronotum, the shield like structure located behind the head of beetles, are both bright shiny metallic green and so are the legs. The beetle's elytra is brown. The beetle has two big black eyes and has grey hairs all over its body. It has brown antenna with four segments and the tip of the antenna resembles a fan. The beetle is leaning leaning over a wooden table and has it's front pair of legs crossed in front of it. A third limb can be seen grasping onto the edge of the table. The beetle is looking up and there is a small pink heart above it. Besides the drawing on the left side, there are various reference photos of the beetle species the drawing is of.

Digital artwork of a dragon head caterpillar (Polyura schreiber) with the many dots on its horned head and chubby body rendered to resemble little stars, a few actually being tiny four-pointed stars. Above its head a partially eclipsed moon is framed between its inner horns, and large four-pointed stars rest on the center of its upper head and hang on either side of its head between its outer horns. More stylized rays and stars radiate out into the edges of the image, rich textured gold against a dark blue framing the green bug's body. The caterpillar is outlined in metallic gold and has fairly realistic face details and feet. Art by Moth Monarch.

Size : 1-ish meter in length
Time period : Early Devonian
