Emi Sakura's post about PAC is breaking my heart

The first time I spoke with him was in Ireland in 2018. When you're living in an English-speaking country, Japanese suddenly reaches your ears in a startling way. Our conversations always started with his "Otsukaresamade-su." Backstage, I wouldn't sense his presence at all, but then those words would arrive right by my ear like the wind. And so I'd search for him. There's no English phrase that translates it just right—its meaning encompasses hello, long time no see, glad to see you, good work, goodbye, good night, see you later, and all sorts of other things rolled into one. I think it's the kind of greeting that comes from the way he's confronted pro wrestling in Japan. It's time. As always, I grab my bag and climb into the car. I can't believe the show goes on. Today and from here on out, forever, I know I'll keep straining to listen. Thank you, PAC.

The youngest person his pager attack killed was 9-year-old Fatima Abdullah, who had just started 4th grade. The pager was on a table when it went off and she picked it up to take to her dad. It exploded in her face and reports said it covered the room in her blood. She wanted to learn English.

I'm from Johnson City, Kansas, about 100 miles southwest of Dodge City. This is horrific. The only light in this situation is seeing so many people not okay with it.

Dodge City is my hometown. What's happening there today is hard to watch.

ICE is conducting what residents describe as a multiday operation across Southwest Kansas, including Dodge City, Garden City and Liberal. The Liberal, KS Vice Mayor reportedly watched as many as 60 of her neighbors were detained and taken away on buses today. Educators in Dodge City are worried about students returning home from school to find their parents gone.

Think about what that means for a child they ask.

Residents report large white buses staged in these communities and ICE agents stationed at meatpacking plants during shift changes, spreading panic through an industry already under stress. Unmarked vehicles recklessly cutting across the cities, pinning cars on main routes and back alleys.

Peaceful protesters have gathered along Wyatt Earp Boulevard near El Capitan, with people also gathering at the fairgrounds in Garden City this evening.

There are deeply troubling reports and images of agents breaking car windows

There are deeply troubling reports and images of agents breaking car windows while babies were inside in car seats. Families are also sharing videos they say show ICE detaining someone born and raised in Garden City. Those accounts need independent verification and answers. We still don't have a confirmed regional count, and I cannot verify suggestions that hundreds were detained today.

But the accounts coming from these communities describe parents, grandparents, neighbors, friends and employees being taken away. Calling an operation a crackdown on "the most dangerous criminals” does not establish that everyone swept up in it fits that description.

Of course, some people are pleased to see this day come. I am not. Federal agents tearing families apart in our state inspires nothing in me but grief for those involved, especially the kids.

And who benefits from the damage left behind?

Removing workers and frightening entire communities risks making agricultural labor harder to find, disrupting meat production and putting more pressure on food prices. Small businesses lose customers. Families lose income. Schools are left helping children cope with fear and

are left helping children cope with fear and uncertainty. Local governments lose too. Immigrants pay taxes; sales, property, income.

For my entire life, immigration has been part of Southwest Kansas. Immigrant families have worked in our packing plants, helped sustain our farms, opened businesses, raised children and made these communities their home. They are part of the place I grew up. I loved being neighbors with them and growing up with their children.

I want to know how many people were taken, why they were detained and what is happening to their children. These communities deserve answers, and every person detained deserves due process and humane treatment.

I grew up understanding that people came to Southwest Kansas to work hard and build a life. Watching families who did exactly that being torn apart feels foreign to everything I have known about home. This is beyond politics. It's human decency. I pray that no tragic event occurs and human dignity is honored by all involved.
