It’s a Crisp Fall Morning on the East Bank. Minneapolis, Minnesota
A rust-colored truss bridge crosses a river, framed by red and yellow autumn leaves. A church steeple rises beyond the bridge. The lit marquee of The Main Cinema faces a brick street beneath orange autumn trees. Fallen leaves scatter across the sidewalk outside the theater.Early sunlight filters through orange leaves over a wooden riverside deck. A large tree fills the foreground, with an arched bridge visible through the branches.A quiet residential street stretches beneath a canopy of glowing orange trees. Fallen leaves line the curbs, and a bicycle route marking is painted on the road.

Alpine Scenery along the High Line Trail.
A flat-topped rocky ridge rises above sunlit alpine slopes, with layered mountain peaks fading into the distance.A narrow dirt trail crosses a grassy mountainside above a deep, forested valley, with rugged peaks lit by the low sun.Lichen-covered boulders and loose rocks fill the foreground of an alpine valley framed by tall, rugged cliffs.Sunlight catches two steep, pale mountain peaks above a shadowed green valley, with patches of snow near their summits.

Ballpoint pen and colored pencil.

At the top of the piece we see the delicately drawn branches and leaves of an apple tree. Just beneath the tree limbs, a bat is flying with one of the green apples in its mouth. This is when the morphing begins, reader. A sequence of 13 drawings show the bat morphing into a teeny witch (with completion of the morph around drawing #9). The morphing creates a spiral leading us to the center of the page where the little witch is running towards her basket filled with apples. It’s likely she’ll re-morph into a bat again and the morphing pattern will continue.

#31DaysofGraves Day 4 Entrance L is for Lychgate, a wonderful illustration by @landisblair.bsky.social for A is for Arsenic: An ABC of Victorian Death, available worldwide. Lychgate: A gate between the land of the living and the dead, marking the boundary between consecrated and unconsecrated soil.
Black and white drawing of a roofed structure with open gates where a wheeled bier and hatted mourners stand. A veiled woman stands at the entrance of the gate. A church tower stands in the background and there are trees and a fence next to the roofed structure--a lychgate, because monuments in a cemetery can be seen in the background.

Spooky bird stories. My Halloween comic from 2024.
A comic titled Spooky Bird Stories. In panel 1, a turkey vulture is telling stories to other vultures, and it says, "She walked toward the source of the terrible smell. She got closer and closer, and then, to her horror, she saw... No dead body." A black vulture says "No!" and a turkey vulture says "Did someone already eat it??" In panel 2, a northern cardinal is telling a story to some songbirds. It says "They peered through the windows of the house at the gory scene. Zombies had smashed through the door in the night. The homeowner was dead. But worst of all... He hadn't refilled the feeders." An eastern bluebird says "Aaah!" and an American goldfinch says "It can't be!". In panel 3, A screech owl is telling a story to other owls. It says "And then the ghost fluffed itself up really big to appear scarier." A saw-whet owl gasps, and a long-eared owl says "Horrifying!". In panel 4, a downy woodpecker is telling a story to other woodpeckers, and says "The eerie sound rang through the dark woods. Tap-tap. Tap-tap. It was the distinctive two-part knock of the Ivory-billed Woodpecker. The species had returned from the dead... FOR REVENGE." A red-cockaded woodpecker says "Yesss".

Pen and watercolor

A pack of witches dance around a fire circle summoning a massive demon in the flames. One of our witches is down though, reader. She lets her sisters know that she won’t be continuing the circle. “Gotta sit this one out, sisters,” she says. “Rolled my ankle.”

I played around with adding a lot of detail to this scene (more shadows, trees in the background, etc.) I think the simpler version works but I’m not sure how I feel about the fire demon drawing. I think I like it. Was having trouble getting the composition of the scene set up with a text bubble in the bottom right. I do like the purple against the black dresses and little boots.

A traditional Japanese tea room (chashitsu) featuring tatami mat flooring, rustic earthen walls, shoji paper windows, and a curved natural wood pillar (tokobashira).
Framed within the quiet dimness of an intimate tea room (chashitsu), a curved, natural wood pillar (tokobashira) arches gracefully upward from smooth straw-gold tatami mat flooring. Bathed in soft, muted light filtered through translucent paper windows (shōji), the rustic clay plaster walls feature a traditional white papered base (koshi-bari), creating a clean lower border along the floor. Resting on the tatami, a carefully arranged set of tea ceremony utensils—a stoneware tea bowl (chawan) with a bamboo whisk (chasen), a silk-wrapped tea caddy (chaire in shifuku), and a glazed water jar (mizusashi) with a dark lacquered lid—awaits the preparation of matcha. Suspended in the corner above, rustic floating wooden shelves (tsuri-dana) hold a small vessel in the ambient shadow. The room exudes a deeply contemplative sensory atmosphere: the crisp, dry aroma of woven rushes (igusa) and aged cedar, the faint, comforting scent of damp clay plaster, the soft rustle of silk robes across straw mats, and the quiet, expectant stillness of a ritual gathering. Rooted in the sukiya-zukuri architectural style perfected during the Azuchi-Momoyama period by tea masters such as Sen no Rikyū, this sanctuary embodies the humble spirit of wabi-cha (rustic tea culture). Rejecting the ostentatious luxury of feudal court displays, the design elevates unpretentious, natural materials—unplaned logs, river clay plaster mixed with rice straw, woven rushes, and handmade mulberry paper. The prominent use of an irregular, curved pillar (tokobashira) deliberately honors the organic contours of nature, celebrating timber in its unaltered state rather than square, machine-milled wood.
