I _did not_ appreciate Mahler making me jump out of my skin with the final orchestral crash of _Das klagende Lied_ as I was carefully touching up the beak. That could have gone so very wrong indeed. 😬😅 (The head without the frill is about 4cm long.)

It's bad enough that we were hoping for better remains of compsognathid-type animals, non-Eotyrannus tyrants and dromaeosaurids in the Wessex Formation, plus noasaurids. Thanks to Makovicky et al. 2026 I now have to think of alvarezsaurids too, which doesn't feel at all right....

Howatt's take on Dilophosaurus, painted some time before 1986, borrows a lot from Peter Snowball's both in anatomy and pose. This is on the questionable side of the copying spectrum, though it's more forgivable as it was done during a time where good references would be very difficult to find. (2/4)

Nice to see mutual admiration of Braginertz's paleoart, as I've been a longtime admirer. A longtime favorite is this one, which I've often shown in classes. I ask the students to tell me what dinosaurs they see in this Cretaceous forest, then wait for 10-15 seconds before someone says "Oh!"
Scene of a Cretaceous forest with big, leafy plants to the left, ferns and shrubbery in the foreground and background, a few tree trunks in the mid-ground, and two ceratopsian dinosaurs in the background. To the right in the foreground is a tree trunk, but in front of it is a not-tree-trunk, the left leg of a presumed large theropod with one toe ending with a claw: artwork by Donna Braginetz.

A bennettitalean, wielandiella. A cluster of branches drawn diagrammatically are in the centre, dicotomising three times. At the end of each branch is a dense cluster of long green serrated leaves. Anatomical drawings of these leave are in the bottom right, amd a close up of a cone is in the top left: it looks like an onion. A picture eof the whole bush, which is rounded is in the top left, and a cross section the the stem is in the bottom left.

After many SVPs, @calamanderso.bsky.social et al. (CC: @akufner.bsky.social @jdpardo.bsky.social @paleobadger.bsky.social) delivered the description of Ninumbeehan dookoodukah, a small Late Triassic temno preserved in estivation burrows. doi.org/10.1098/rspb... (CC: @serpenillus.bsky.social for art)
Composite reconstruction of the skull of the Late Triassic stereospondyl Ninumbeehan dookoodukah via CT analyses of multiple skulls. The skull is longer than wide and generally triangular, though with a blunted tip of the snout. In lateral view, it angles upwards posteriorly such that the back of the skull is much taller than the snout. The typical interpterygoid vacuities of temnospondyls occur on the palate. The lower jaw is also reconstructed, featuring the typical suite of elements found in temnospondyls.Life reconstruction of Ninumbeehan dookoodukah by Gabriel Ugueto. The artwork is a three-paneled figure depicting different seasons. During the wet season, one individual rests underwater (first panel on left). At the start of the dry season, multiple individuals form vertical burrows, which retain some water inside, to shelter from the elements (middle panel). At the end of the dry season, the rains trigger the survivors to emerge from their burrows, but some have died and remain entombed in the burrow (last panel on right).

A digital drawing of Merychippus, running proudly. It's a male, and he has quite a lot of different old scars. So this one is a survivor. The background is dark and simple, and there's a crescent moon above the horse.
