Neat framing, but incorrect. Moving the focus of taxation from income to wealth (increasing fuel duties/ introducing road pricing) would be politically difficult but economically sensible. Removing cliff edges would be politically easy and economically sensible. Details matter but principles clear.

If we have a big fiscal hole to fill economically sensible actions - increase income tax, delay tax rises to 28-29, cut spending - look politically horrible. Politically easier - tax banks, wealth, savings etc - economically horrible.

Initially the benefits of the IT revolution were reasonably widely dispersed, but as the 2000s progressed, competition decreased and they began to be increasingly captured by a handful of huge tech firms, exactly as economic theory would predict. And those tech firms were all based in the US

British decline in one story. Any state which finds itself incapable of managing a project as basic as rolling out a 20th century tech between its biggest cities needs to ask itself some profound questions about what hope it has of managing the technologies of the 21st.
