Chaim is bringing the fire 🔥
Abstract
We provide a clearer presentation of the Chair44 monotile, a new strongly aperiodic
monotile in three-dimensional Euclidean space E3
.
With LLM tools (ChatGPT Astra), Ioannis Tsiokos recently reported the first
known strongly aperiodic monotile in three-dimensional Euclidean space E
3
, the Chair44
monotile (see Figure 3, taken from Tsiokos’ preprint [11]). Hats off to Tsiokos for this
discovery, the framework he developed, and the human inquiry that led to the Chair44
monotile.
However, the paper itself and the formalization that it claims for support are not
in a form that is readily usable to anyone who wants to understand or check it. This is
not just because of the needless length or complexity of the argument (which is indeed
overwhelming as presented), or because the formal repository is not in normal form, or
because much of the text is misleading or poorly organized, but mainly because there
is so much irrelevant puff to push through. These are hallmarks of an LLM-driven
research paper.
We must, absolutely, insist on a higher standard for scientific discourse. The aim
must be to communicate, clearly, with people in the community — certainly this is an
historical requirement for publication.1

I have a second piece display at O'Hanlon Center for the Arts in Mill Valley CA this month, entitled "Julia". Here it is, and a short math-explainer of what we're looking at
A hexagonal grid in the plane with each cell filled with a small image of a black and white fractal. Some of the fractals are larger (and darker) than the others, so when looking from a distance another image emerges (as the fractals themselves act like dark/light pixels for the larger image)

I used to post long #VisualAlgebra threads on #MathTwitter before realizing that I was actually in #TheBadPlace. I'm going to make my debut #MathSky thread today, with visuals that I've never publicly shared. (Can you guess the topic?) I'm excited to show you, and I hope you enjoy! 1/19 🧵👇

My institution held a workshop about this one summer and I went. I didn't have to change anything about my courses, but I did rewrite all my syllabi in a way that makes them much friendlier to new students and easier to navigate.

So. A bit of a brag on a project I've been working on this summer. First: credit where credit is due. I learned about what I'm going to describe from @clontz.org, while participating in last summer's MAA/AIBL workshop led by @drew-lewis.com et al.

Today's classes included one dedicated to @dccmath.bsky.social . My students have been studying the classification of wallpaper patterns into 17 symmetry types, and today they practiced making some patterns to fit given descriptions. Here is a thread of images for your enjoyment 1/n

Working on a new article about student evaluations of teaching (SETs) and feeling a little spicy about it. #highereducation
So traditional SETs don't measure what they claim to measure; they discriminate against people who aren't white, male, English-speaking, and straight; in a best-case scenario they provide feedback that cannot be acted upon until it's too late to do any good; they're too long and complicated to be used in any other way; and they don't really even qualify as actual evaluations because they are being written by untrained students with presumably zero knowledge of professional quality standards for teaching. Other than that, they're just fine.

One thing I liked about the other place was my crowd had lots of thoughtful reflective educators and we would sometimes do syllabus swap day. anyone wanna do that again? (totally bragging that I have 2 out of 3 syllabi for spring done as of this moment)

exam week is upon me. I don't wanna grade papers, so I'm planning next term. And who is the wonderful human who left me 95% of a semester in a folder last spring that I can reuse for next spring? I know the name, but I do not recognize this behavior.

Sat through a meeting with a rep from one of the big publishers showing off their online homework/assessment system. And ya'll. They do not understand ANYthing about the way our courses are designed. Or about the role that an instructor plays. Or what it means to assess student understanding.
