John Carpenter’s Halloran @profhalloran.bsky.social · 19hLike, it’s a simple frame, right? But it’s useful for understanding all sorts of exiting political landscapes. John Carpenter’s Halloran @profhalloran.bsky.social · 19hA big problem with this conversation is that there are things that should happen. And there are things that can happen. And the Venn diagram is absolutely not a circle. Compounding that is the problem of not really knowing with complete certainty what things can happen and what things can’t. 130

John Carpenter’s Halloran @profhalloran.bsky.social · 10/10/2026Today is the twenty-third annual World Day Against the Death Penalty. I believe that the state should not have to power to kill people under its care and custody. I believe that there is no criminal act that one can commit that is degrading enough to one’s humanity such that it justifies execution. 14413

John Carpenter’s Halloran @profhalloran.bsky.social · 09/10/2026This statement should have never been released in this form, and the USCCB should be ashamed of themselves. 230
John Carpenter’s Halloran @profhalloran.bsky.social · 09/10/2026Twice in the statement the USCCB addresses Hasan’s actions. Once saying that they can’t be condoned (misspelling his name). Then they go on to say “even of one who has done great harm”. The phrasing in both cases is poor, and invites misinterpretations. And, I would argue, also erodes dignity. 160
John Carpenter’s Halloran @profhalloran.bsky.social · 09/10/2026For starters. And I’m troubled by the failure to indicate that the death penalty is inadmissible—especially insofar as a public execution exacerbates concerns about human dignity. Similarly, I don’t like that the USCCB doesn’t indicate that Catholics believe the death penalty should be abolished. 180
