The permanent secretary post for the department of health and social care is being advertised with pay of 170-200k. The budget responsibility will be roughly around 200 to over 1000 times as much as a university leader - and yet get paid significantly less - albeit a great salary.

It seems to me that we need to be especially cautious about claims of efficacy when undertaking interventions with sex offenders, especially in view of the Sex Offender Treatment Programme in prisons. But I welcome a more open approach to the evidence whatever the outcomes.

I would be delighted to contribute to this because it seems to me that there are plenty of opportunities for us to do better. One is where we, as a sector, routinely drive a coach and horses through EDI considerations with ‘internal academic promotions’ with only one candidate in the field.

We pride ourselves in the HE sector in our commitment to diversity. Yet we have internal promotion systems whereby stronger candidates from elsewhere cannot compete for these posts because we actively exclude them. And we wonder why as a sector we struggle with EDI.
