Dr Helen Garr started off our #ICPH2026 workshop with Canopi on 'Building Effective Physician Health Programmes that Physicians Trust and Use' by likening a frog boiling in hot water to a physician working in an increasingly stressful environment. Do you relate to this analogy?

“We talk about suicide in numbers. Approximately one doctor dies by suicide every three weeks, and one nurse dies by suicide every week. Those statistics are shocking. But behind every single number is a person. A colleague. A friend. A parent. A son or daughter. A husband, wife or partner. Someone who sat next to somebody in the staff room. Someone who made somebody laugh on a terrible shift. Someone who noticed when a patient was frightened and stayed with them for another five minutes. Someone who taught a student. Someone who held a hand. Someone who made a difference.”

If you can't see a way out, please know that there is always someone willing to help and support you. Today, take that first step and tell someone you're struggling - speak to a friend, loved one, colleague, manager, healthcare professional, or call a mental health helpline. You're not alone. #NSMD
Sometimes life can feel overwhelming. You might feel stuck, exhausted or unsure how things could possibly get better. But you don’t have to figure everything out on your own.

Talking to someone and asking for help can be difficult, especially when you’re used to looking after everyone else. But taking that first step can make a difference. Whatever you’re facing right now, things can change. There are people who care and there is hope.

You don’t have to go through it alone. Take that first step and talk to someone.

TW: Suicide. "There's no shame in struggling." Dr Benji Waterhouse's message of hope provides a much needed reminder that health and care workers are human, and can struggle with their mental health too. Don't let feelings of shame prevent you from getting the help you need. #NSMD
Increasingly, healthcare workers are expected to do impossible jobs. But we’re mere mortals, not superhumans.
During the darkest periods of my career, I sometimes wondered if suicide was the solution. Instead, I got support, had therapy, and changed my working life. Things got better.
There’s no shame in struggling. Please ask for help. I hope the future you will be glad you did.

Feedback Friday "For the first time in my life I was faced with mental health issues that I did not recognise in myself, despite seeing similar things in patients day in and day out. Plant a Memorial Tree with Doctors in Distress
Doctors in Distress launched the National Memorial Tree Campaign in 2023 to remember health and care workers who have taken their own lives. Whilst also being a tribute, a memorial tree also symbolises an organisation’s commitment to protect the mental health and wellbeing of their staff.Host a Memorial
Hosting a memorial for NSMD could be organising a minute of silence, providing a space for staff to share memories of those they have lost, or simply lighting a candle in your home. Last year, Medical Director Dr Helen Garr attended an event hosted by Leicester University Hospital Trust.Raise Awareness of Support Available
Many health and care staff feel unable to access mental health support from their local GP due to worries about confidentiality. This NSMD, raise awareness of Practitioner Health and Doctors in Distress by speaking to a wellbeing lead, sharing information in your internal email newsletter, or putting up posters in your breakroom.Check In With a Colleague
Checking in with a colleague helps to create a supportive environment in healthcare. PH’s Suicide Navigation Guide includes a helpful section titled ‘Worried About a Colleague’, which provides advice on noticing signs of distress in a colleague, how to begin a conversation with them, and how to support them to get the help they need.

Many of Practitioner Health's clinicians and therapists have worked in healthcare, and have a deep understanding of the struggles that their patients face in the workplace. We're proud to provide support for health and care professionals, by health and care professionals.
Feedback Friday "Practitioner Health saved my life. I think what was particularly powerful and important for me was being treated by clinicians who understand the mentality common to many doctors- that we are terrible patients, we often ignore or minimise our own difficulties, and we feel huge guilt about receiving treatment or taking time off. The wisdom, experience, insight, empathy, kindness and skill shown to me was the best of the best and I am just so incredibly grateful. Thank you for caring for me and giving me my life and career back!"
