Bonus WIP: Rivets. I modelled this helmet after the Benvie stone as well as Anglo-Saxon helmet finds in Wollaston and Coppergate (minus the cheek guards). #Earlymedieval #Blender #Pictish #miniaturedesign

You didn't get a #WIP on Wednesday so you're getting it on Thursday. Mainly the cloth details and shoes are on the to do list for swordsman #1, so I'm going to put him to the side for the time being and take care of the other 3. #miniaturedesign #historicalwargaming #blender #earlymedieval

Pictish art includes many figures with decorated tunic hems, though trying to replicate this while keeping it within the realm of actually paintable detail isn't the easiest. I'll definitely need to check the test prints to see if it is too small to paint. #earlymedieval #blender #miniaturedesign

Another intermission, where I randomly got the idea to model another thing not specifically war related. In this case it's a river currach, similar to the Welsh coracle, a small boat. #Earlymedieval #Pictish #Blender #Miniaturedesign

MMF has introduced different currency options, so now all my minis are listed in proper British pounds, not these newfangled American "dollars" (Terrible name, I would have called them alloas). This has also come with a slight price increase.

I have a feeling the Pictish swordsmen are going to be a bit more trial and error with the posing, I think their status demands something a bit more dynamic. #Pictish #Blender #Earlymedieval

Back at #WIPWednesday with more heads! With all the variations of helmets available I figured I could instead to two sets of helmeted heads, one covering the 6th-9th centuries and the other covering the 9th-12th centuries. Here is some of the latter.

After doing many historical minis, labouring over trying to make sure things are as accurate as my knowledge allows, it feels good to work on something fantasy, where I can justify design choices as "I think it looks cool".

#WIPWednesday One thing I hadn't really thought of until now was having variations in height among the minis, I want to keep it subtle so they don't stand out too much but the extra height on the longspearmen wielding overhead does help them reach over the shields at the front.

Around this time last year I released my first mini, the knight captain, a fantasy model largely taking inspiration from early modern armour. Looking at it now it's a little rough around the edges but I am still quite proud of it. #minipainting #minidesign
The Knight CaptainFrom left to right here is my Pictish Toisech Champion, Knight Captain and Dwarf Honour Guard, evidently by the time I started on the Picts I had decided on slightly more exaggerated proportions. I also notice that while the Dwarfs are also quite bulky their tall helmets put them up to human height, all part of the plan.

I should have acknowledged it long ago but social media is a truly terrible platform to discuss history. Every time I open one of these sites there are some of the most unknowledgeable people on the planet using their poor understanding of history as a bludgeoning tool to "win" arguments.

I also made my first attempt at Kobolds, because I always wanted an army of 3 foot tall funny lizards. These models were never proportioned for printing and wasn't happy with the details anyway but I will one day have my kobold army.

"The only time to look back is to see how far you've come" or something like that, and I must say looking back my initial attempts at blending(?) were rather messy. I invite you to view this gallery of questionable quality. #miniaturedesign #pictish #blender #3dmodelling
An old WIP of the Pictish Toisech set I released and then took down because I wasn't happy with the quality of my work.

Noticeably I seemed to not understand how to model a face yet.

It was also designed before I had my own 3d printer, so I was rather in the dark on what proportions would work as I only ever had one draft mini printed.Despite the camera quality this is not a bigfoot photograph, this was the draft mini for the Pict Toiseach, the details were rough but seeing my own creation in person for the first time was quite something.

(Even if the scabbard failed to print because I was a clot and forgot to add supports)

I travelled up the dodgiest set of stairs up a cliff I've ever seen and all I found was this chapel. This is the Brough of Deerness, a site of both Norse and earlier Pictish settlement, not that much is left of either. Still a lovely view though. #orkney #picts #vikings
