I’ve taken the plunge with these Black Guard figures from Reconquer Designs. My first time with resin figures. Metal is normally my go to. Any feedback or suggestions or things to look out for would be appreciated. Any paint jobs pics also welcome. #Midgardheroicbattles

Great priming weather for my projects over the next few months. 1st up, these rather good, crisp Ragnarok Miniatures “Sons of Odin” javelin men nicely armed with two spears. I’ll get ready for “The Forgotten Battle - Fulford 1066” to be fought at Steel Lard, Sheffield UK - 14th November.

More play testing of “Never greater slaughter” - Brunanburh AD937, coming to Ebor Lard this Saturday. I “turned” the landscape through 45 degrees or so to create a slight diagonal in order to allow the chance of the Alliance reaching the Brimstage Brook as a cohesive line.

Cascadia with my daughter and son in law. 5 hexagon landscapes, 5 different animals. Such a simple formula that can deliver the friction required for such a compelling game. Recommended.

A versatile set of neoprene rivers from Patriot Games Sheffield that I acquired at Britcon. The smart money on Brunanburh being fought on a site on the Wirral means I need some streams not least something representing the Clatterbrook. “Never Greater Slaughter “ - coming to Ebor Lard in 3 weeks.

All quiet on Matthew’s Hill on the eve of battle. This is my interpretation of the view looking up the Studley Pike road from the Stone House. The model of the house was produced by that very clever man Paul Edwards of Sabotag3d. “Lincoln’s life or a Tiger’s death!” - tomorrow at the Lard Workshop.

Wheat’s Tigers - “….the lowest scum of the lower Mississippi …adventurous wharf rats, thieves, and outcasts and bad characters generally.” “ Lincoln’s life or a Tiger’s death!” they cry as they storm into battle. Going into action this Saturday at the Lard Workshop.

Union Command for the Lard Workshop. The points value reflects the poorly led and poorly trained nature of the Union army at the outset of hostilities in 1861. Some ambiguity in the uniforms here particularly Marston’s 2nd New Hampshire’s. 😬🫣 Several characters here didn’t survive the actual day.

Confederate Command labelled up for “Lincoln’s life or a Tiger’s death!” that I’m presenting at the Lard Workshop next weekend. Historically correct names and ranks including the colourful filibuster Major Wheat, looking rather conspicuous on his horse…. Some Midgard inspired ideas here.

St. Cuthbert’s Way finally completed. It was monsoon conditions on Sunday where no Goretex in the world would survive. Even my skin was soaked but plodded on. Now feeling very Godly. Full focus now on the Lard Workshop being very spiritual to my game participants - Wheat’s Tigers not withstanding.

Border crossing 340m on St. Cuthbert’s Way. The signs say Welcome to England & Scotland respectively. most of us only get to see the crossing from England to Scotland and visa versa on the M6, A1, A7, or A68. Not many get to see this one and another just like it on the Pennine Way just a mile away.

@mogsymakes.bsky.social I blame James for this. He’s got me firmly stuck in the Dark Ages. It started with all things Athelstan, The Alliance, Brunanburh; now I’m following the way of St. Cuthbert from Melrose to Holy Island, with just the Chronicles and tent to keep me company. Any cures please?

As they make their foray down to the West Midlands Lard day tomorrow, under the light of a gibbous moon the redcoats quietly depart via the watergate, leaving the sanctuary of Fort Detroit behind them. Unknown to them Pontiac has spies all around and his boys will be waiting for them…

I’m super impressed with this campaign collection of plaid cloaks from Weave of War. I need figures to represent the armies of Alba and Strathclyde who fought at Brunanburh for my Midgard scenario at Ebor Lard. These existing Steve Barber models get a nice face lift. #Midgardheroicbattles

Based this morning and waiting for a bit of sun to shine to get the W&N varnish spray out. These are Foundry Viking spearmen. I’m really smitten with Midgard at the minute. The game is helping me to understand a period of history I knew little about. Athelstan is fast becoming a hero of mine.

Painting dark ages figures is definitely a process. I don’t know about you but I’m discovering highlighting as I go along is sensible. Once a wash goes on it is difficult for my old brain to remember what original base colours I put down because the wash distorts them.

Two more Saxon Fyrd groups backed up by a group of Hearthguard based up. These are Renegade Miniatures, sadly no longer in production. They’ll be defending the Germany Beck, Fulford during Steel Lard in November. It is 1066 so Haley’s comet is around. The omens are ominous… #Midguardheroicbattles

Footage of diving on the SS Thistlegorm with my son Rory. Sunk by a German bomber on 06/10/41. The cargo included Bedford trucks, Universal Carriers, Norton motorcycles, many Bren guns & LE303s, and two steam locomotives. Wreck sits proud at a depth of 30 metres. youtu.be/qcfnn0r1qq4?...
