State v. Samuel Ward, Jr. 2026 WL 2983954

Tennessee Court of Criminal Appeals reversed a conviction because the trial court excluded mention of the victim's assigned sex at birth, which "misled the jury" by leaving them "with the impression that a male defendant killed a female victim." Absolutely unreal.

I grew up in Georgia. I went back home to cover two trans candidates making history, and it brought me a lot of joy. I drove from Atlanta, where Bentley Hudgins is running, to Cartersville, where Bella Bautista is making her bid, to get a sense of the difference between their two districts.

In Georgia, two trans candidates believe voters are ready for them
For Bentley Hudgins, running could mean a historic first in the Georgia House. For Bella Bautista, it starts with giving voters a choice they haven’t had in 16 years.

I've been honored to know Bentley since they were in undergrad and I was a law student. They're the real deal.

This is a MAJOR WIN for intersex & trans people in California! The law prohibits health plans & insurers from discriminating against individuals based on sex, including intersex traits. It ensures they cannot be denied coverage for medically necessary healthcare, including gender-affirming care 💜

This is quite cool. My university is the first organisation in the world to force Microsoft to allow us to turn off copilot summaries in Word 365, after a backlash against it from staff (including, very vocally, me). That cannot have been easy for our heroic IT people so hats very much off to them!

Since court orders are all over the place, maybe it justifies all these “narcissism of small differences” in class by class policies too. They have to be able to do things differently and use — or not use — the tools with intentional calibration, in different contexts

Any other profs experiencing whiplash where other faculty have different approaches to AI than you do? It's becoming clear to me that my current students habitually used it in R&W I, and they expect to do so in my class, too.

The Washington bar exam fiasco is yet another data point for why this is a ridiculous way to gatekeep the profession. You’re testing other people’s legal judgment and you can’t foresee an issue with bandwidth capacity?!

I also hate the weight! I use the logitech combo touch keyboard case. The tab that props up the screen fold all the way back to let the ipad sit at a good angle for writing. The other thing I hate is that I haven't found a case/stand situation that let's me comfortably write in portrait orientation.

OH! And one feature I use all the time is "copy link to paragraph," where I can just leave myself links to my specific notes about a topic in drafts, folders, calender items, etc.

OneNote saved me on that front. It's easy to create sections and section groups, and--super important to my particular brain chemistry and habits--super easy to move things around and re-organize later.

I've long been tempted by the ReMarkable, but I still use an ipad/pencil and OneNote. The syncing is seamless and easy across all my devices. As a nod toward the paper feel, I do use a scratchy paper-like screen cover.

To my past, current, and future law students: please know that your accommodations are not a "large advantage." They're a need. Legal education is broken in so many stupid ways. But what we are not going to do is normalize this kind of thinking. Let's go over why. 🧵

Beyond Feasibility in Legal Scholarship
