I’m pretty sure this is a phishing email, the biggest red flag being that it claims my work is “appreciated.” I’ll be especially annoyed if it’s from IT as one of those fake phishing‑test “security training” traps. How dare IT exploit my basic human desire to feel appreciated as bait!

When not distracted by the view it hiking on Saturday I did occasionally look down; mostly to avoid matagouri thorns, try to remember if matagouri berries are edible (decided to not try my luck), and have a little snack on tātarāmoa/bush lawyer berries (I do know they are edible and yummy)

I've sent some whalebone to my aunt, who's having something carved for her brother. Now I have the urge to carve something myself. This urge hits me about once every five years—mostly because I tend to avoid sawing off a section by hand, takes forever!

Thanks for sharing this briefing on feed additives to reduce methane emissions from ruminant livestock. It's a clear and helpful overview of the current evidence. We’ll be using this as part of our teaching program next semester to give students an introduction to the topic.

Where are we at with feed additives to reduce methane emissions from ruminant livestock? Our latest briefing gives an overview of the current evidence. TL;DR: some are ready to implement now, some still have big question marks. But also, climate policies are needed to motivate adoption at scale.

The USDA is paying farmers for cover-cropping & no-till. Both those practices have enviro benefits, so that's good (I think). But neither reliably stores soil carbon, so billing it as a GHG win is bad. www.reuters.com/business/env...

A bit of a mystery, the orchard likely has ~300 varieties but records are incomplet (we've startled a genomics project to address this). So I simply sorted by taste into black bag probably eating apples, red bag cooking/cider/crab. We'll talk in class about apple variety ID challenges.
