Lilia waded through the street, shoes in hand until she reached the steps of the anchored docks floating at the edge of The City at the Center of the Sea. The rubber flats squeaked a resistant protest as she slipped them over her pruned skin, pushing aside the dead layers of pale flesh that sloughed off against the heel.
Ascending the decrepit wooden staircase to meet the ship at level was always harder than she thought it would be, her balance on dry land skewed from the constant battle against the water currents in the city streets and the tender spots of pain where her softened skin had thinned to raw pink sores.

She was tasked with providing a tour to a new arrival today, and was relieved by their initial lack of questions. It was always easier that way, so many others struggled to make sense of the dissonance between outside perspective and the place they found themselves.

Lilia pulled a plastic folder out from the satchel resting on her hip, lining up the file photo and information with the potential citizen in front of her. She tried not to reveal the uneasy feeling that bubbled up in her chest, recruits like this one were often sorely disappointed.

"You'll be assigned to the women's tenements if your status is approved, let's get you over to The Manor," Lilia gave a small smile, eyes catching on the slight furrow that crossed the immigrants face, their mouth opened slightly but closed without comment. "We'll want to stop to get you a dress as well, you'll want to make a good impression. Welcome to Lighthouse City, Danielle."

"I prefer Dani, or-"

Lilia whirled on the recruit before the timid whisper finished slipping out into the salty, smoke stained air, her stare seemed to swallow the sound itself.
