The room was quiet. No radio chatter, no hum of an entire military base at work, not even the whistle of a kettle. Just the steady sound of his own breathing, the weight of his thoughts, and the four sets of footfalls coming down the hall.

Good pets. They came when called. Always.

Price sat at the edge of their shared bed, heavy quilt already turned down, soft light spilling across the room from the lamp in the corner. He'd laid out everything beforehand—cuffs lined in fleece, coils of rope set neatly to the side, oil warming in a small dish on the windowsill, a folded set of towels, and a hoodie he'd pulled from his own drawer.

Preparation was half the battle, after all. Made everything go smoother, sure, but more importantly it made them know they'd all be safe.

Twenty-something years learning how to be a proper Dominant taught him that much. He'd done this enough times to know that the real scene didn't start with the ropes or the orders. It started here, with the care he took before anyone else got to walk through that door.

The knock came soft. Too soft for who Price knew waited on the other side of the door. He barely looked up from his desk—pen still perched between his fingers and a stack of after-action reports open beneath him. The digital clock on the far wall read 17:42, just about the right time for the lad to come sulking in if he was attempting to avoid people.

Though… if he was… it wasn't a good sign.

"Come in," Price called gently, setting the pen aside.

The door creaked open. Hesitant. Slow, like it wanted to shield whoever was on the other side. And for good reason, too—Johnny stepped inside like a man walking to his execution. Boots scuffing against the floor, fatigues stained dark with sweat and grime and what Price desperately hoped wasn't the lad's own blood. Dust clung to his trousers, and a smear of something—ash?—cut across the curve of his jaw.
