This call to ban non-EU ‘foreign nationals’ from social housing is yet further advancement of far-right, anti-immigration narratives. Not only would it be clearly racialised, but it does nothing to solve the structural problems with the housing system caused by decades of under-investment.

Dog-whistle politics has real consequences. The normalisation of racist, anti-immigration rhetoric leads to the racist scenes we’re witnessing in Thetford, Norfolk. These have included the attempted storming of the homes of people seeking asylum, pelting with rocks & chanting “we want them out”.

Talking about safe routes means nothing if you're increasing deadly border violence at the same time. Share our blueprint for an asylum system that works with your MP now and show our new PM it's time to stop border violence and start saving lives: fightforasylumrights.org/give-the-new...
Text reads: Andy Burnham’s “relentless” focus on stopping channel crossings won’t work - unless he has the courage to do the one thing no politician so far has been brave enough to try. Listen to the evidence. We've got years of evidence showing what increasing border enforcement does.
Exploiters push all the risk onto people seeking safety, which means smaller, more overcrowded boats, rushed crossings at more dangerous times and from more dangerous locations.
They force vulnerable people to hold the tiller and steer the boat, so they are criminalised while the people putting them at risk profit. The new PM is gesturing at the idea of “safe routes” while talking about “increasing enforcement activity”.
We know in practice that means more state-sponsored violence towards refugees including children at the border.
It shows he either doesn’t understand the problem or hasn’t yet got the courage to do what would actually work.

Hostility isn't working - and everyone can see it. Government after Government has tried making the asylum system crueller, and left it more broken than ever. But there's a better way. With 200+ refugee orgs, we've sent Andy Burnham a blueprint for a system based in both evidence and welcome.
A 'blueprint' with advice for how to base asylum policy on evidence, not cruelty, with a post it note stuck to it addressing to to Andy Burnham, from 300+ refugee charities. Advice includes lifting the ban on work and housing people in communities not camps
