America has always had oligarchs. McNamara, Getty, Hunt, the Mellons, the Kennedys, the DuPonts, Ford. Rockefeller, Carnegie & Vanderbilt. Astor, Renssalaer & Girard. Hancock, Franklin & Washington. Grossman's historical erasure condemns us to repeat all the same mistakes...

There are many history and sociology books that contend the US has been a white supremacist and Christian fundamentalist project since its inception which suggests that Trump is a reversion to the mean rather than an aberration

August's #storygraph wrap-up. Crowley's Little, Big might be the single best book I've ever read in my entire life. RIP to an absolute master. On the other side of things, Reamde is the worst Stephenson book I've ever read and as it stands it's in the running for worst book this year #booksky

The People of the Abyss by Jack London

A fascinating facet of conservative culture war nonsense is that all the old "traditional" stuff they love was incredibly divisive in its own contemporary time. Those Rodin sculptures they use in their pfps were from a series on Dante's Inferno and were hated by conservatives of the era!

For $1.99 this one is a no-brainer. Sublime prose in a welcome reprieve from the more whimsical "dark" fantasy that's currently filling every bookshelf

Implicit in this analysis is that "the stupid poors" will spend this windfall on conscientious consumption instead of paying off loans with interest rates ranging from 12%-28%, or say replacing an older vehicle that would otherwise incur significant annual repair costs
