America has always had oligarchs. McNamara, Getty, Hunt, the Mellons, the Kennedys, the DuPonts, Ford. Rockefeller, Carnegie & Vanderbilt. Astor, Renssalaer & Girard. Hancock, Franklin & Washington. Grossman's historical erasure condemns us to repeat all the same mistakes...

A heist movie but it's about gutterpunks stealing 16GB USB sticks from gift bags in a Hyatt hosting the Midwestern Home Insurance Agents convention in downtown Cincinnati

And while I wouldn't say that the award winning One Battle After Another has articulate politics, it is about vaguely left wing revolutionaries running from the white supremacist cabal that runs big business and the government

Bong Joon-Ho movies are almost entirely about class war and they get wide distribution. Boots Riley's "I Love Boosters" has a scene that explains Marxism in the same way that "Trading Places" explained commodity brokerages.

There are many history and sociology books that contend the US has been a white supremacist and Christian fundamentalist project since its inception which suggests that Trump is a reversion to the mean rather than an aberration

Learning to use terminal emulators significantly changed my life for the better, though! For instance, the first settings I changed in Caves of Qud was movement keybinds to be vi-like and I'm sorry but numpad movement is for savages

I really like them, I'm on my second Boox device. I had a long list of wants (b&w screen, unpowered stylus, backlight, Libby, etc). The Note Air 3 ticked a lot of those boxes but it's on the heavy side because of the larger size and aluminum chassis but whatever I use it almost daily

erik @praxisandalli.es · 17/09/2026
I have a Boox Note Air 3. Boox runs a modified Android so you can use a ton of apps directly on the device like Libby/Kindle and even Hoopla. Their official site sells refurbished devices and if you keep an eye on that section you can pick up your preferred model for comparatively cheap

August's #storygraph wrap-up. Crowley's Little, Big might be the single best book I've ever read in my entire life. RIP to an absolute master. On the other side of things, Reamde is the worst Stephenson book I've ever read and as it stands it's in the running for worst book this year #booksky
A collage of book covers including:

The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood
The People of the Abyss by Jack London
Sand by Hugh Howey
Across the Sand by Hugh Howey
The Tainted Cup by Robert Jackson Bennet
Little, Big by John Crowley
Leila Khaled - Icon of Palestinian Liberation by Sarah Irving
Reamde by Neal Stephenson

A fascinating facet of conservative culture war nonsense is that all the old "traditional" stuff they love was incredibly divisive in its own contemporary time. Those Rodin sculptures they use in their pfps were from a series on Dante's Inferno and were hated by conservatives of the era!

So all of those references to "unleavened bread" in Exodus should be changed to "cracker"? That participants at Seder share the "cracker of affliction"?
... He talked about, right after he won the primary, he talked about breaking bread with Jews at Passover. And I was like, "Okay, that sentence alone" —and, for people who are listeners that don't know, we don't eat bread on Passover, very intentionally so. It's actually a big part of our ceremony.

There are so many books where a major character is either an established or aspiring writer. Just in the last couple months of my own reading I saw it in Crowley's "Little, Big", Hosseini's "Kite Runner" and Krasznahorkai's "War & War".
