Today my @nytimes.com colleagues and I are launching a new series called Lost Science. We interview US scientists who can no longer discover something new about our world, thanks to this year‘s cuts. Here is my first interview with a scientist who studied bees and fires. Gift link: nyti.ms/3IWXbiE

"Alignment" (aka fealty) is not a merit-review criteria. If ideology determines outcomes, our world-class federally funded research system will reward apparatchiks and loyalists while punishing opponents and critics. And then soon, it won't be world-class. www.washingtonpost.com/education/20...

White House considers funding advantage for colleges that align with Trump policies
The proposal has the potential to transform the government’s vast research funding operation, which has long awarded university grants based on scientific merit.

Judging by the shamefully opportunistic & politicizing rhetoric of some rightwingers on Twitter, & their cynical use of Charlie Kirk’s horrific murder for political point scoring, it’s almost as if Minnesota Rep. Melissa Hortman wasn’t murdered by a Trump-voting MAGA maniac just 12 weeks ago.

A show of bipartisan support for NIH. Basically flat except for ARPA-H. The President’s budget proposal basically ignored (as it should have been).

To me, much of the problem appears to be that moderates are hearing about what the left thinks from irritating people on twitter or from the right. I agree with Sarah McBride in that progressives need to spend more time talking to moderates. I don’t agree on the need to moderate on positions.

Another highly recommended read. She lays out the cost of the terminations and the ending tells the importance of pushing back and standing up for core principles It is easy to lose the point of all this in graphs and statistics (I plead guilty, your honor) but the human stakes are more compelling
