The position is well considered and I’ve been arguing it forever — timeliness matters for discussion

Agree with the smoothing thing. I just likely never would have gotten it out so that is the counterfactual. I like that it allows talking about it instead of not — though unfortunately so far only the manner not yet the substance

What if improved sequencing technologies caused people to say remember how hard we had to work to sequence a single gene? We’re going to limit how many sequences you can deposit in public repos because there can be no conceivable reason to get science out other than credit/recognition

Yes it’s different but not devoid of reflective thinking in the iterative process and my manual editing of the output. The biggest loss in my estimation is the polished output is decidedly less pointed/sharp and more generous than my raw input. So it may be less fun to read but not less considered

Making assumptions about the necessary absence of human involvement and responsibility in AI-assisted science might make people feel more virtuous and relevant but it’s a straw man. Also gating progress just because it’s fast is a terrible idea and an irresponsible throttling of science
011
Prachee Avasthi @pracheeac.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
I’m not advocating for randomly increasing publication output anywhere. I’m saying that gating it is stupid when bottlenecks have been removed that usefully accelerate many aspects of science. Slower human contingent slop isn’t better because it’s human

Prachee Avasthi @pracheeac.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
this is ridiculous, the input was a ton my ideas and words. None of the ideas are generated by AI. Then AI polish, then editing where it deviated. And the delicious irony is the people turning off their brains to be unable to grapple with ideas when AI is mentioned.

It’s not that far off. Much if the language is stuff I’ve said on twitter and elsewhere many times. Why does it matter? It’s what I believe. Here’s the human written view: arxiv has lost the thread and isn’t up to the task of their current role. Real Prachee is a bigger asshole than Claude

This isn’t science … it’s taking a long rant and turning it into a written format for the internet (that I edited and agree with). It’s borderline misconduct to abdicate judgement to proxies

The "my competitor will see my preprint and replicate/rush their story to a journal" = their competitor has to have already done at least the rate-limiting parts of the work. To me, this is about someone wanting to receive exclusive credit for work that other groups were doing simultaneously.

the poor generalizability of any model output certainly is a function of the structure and redundancy of the training data but i think the greater point here is that human performance isn’t the aspirational goal

Yes absolutely. It is just post publication peer review rather than gated by it. It’s even better if the peer review is public. Funding always involves peer review as well and journal stamps are terrible proxies and inferior to more substantive vetting regardless
