If politicians feared opposition majorities with 40% of the vote, they would pass proportional representation. Instead, they rely on fear to lock in votes without earning them. Eventually the pendulum swings, leaving us stuck with the outcome we feared, under the system they refused to fix.

Fair Vote Canada volunteers talked to voters about proportional representation at Peterborough Pride!
A volunteer stands behind a folding table under a bright blue outdoor canopy tent in a grassy park. The front of the table features a white banner reading "Fair Vote Canada / Représentation équitable au Canada" alongside the slogan "Make Every Vote Count!" and website URL. On the table are informational pamphlets and two display posters showing pie charts comparing election results: one titled "Ontario votes 2025" and another titled "Federal Election 2025" covering Toronto and Saskatchewan. In the background, trees, sunny park grounds, and other event tents are visible.

Elections must not be decided by a few swing ridings. First-past-the-post has plunged the US into chaos through hyper-polarized two-party politics, disproportionate majorities, and regional one-party domination. Proportional representation is how Canada avoids that fate.
Graphic showing a post from Scott Robertson (@sarobertson_) quoting Bob Rae on fighting for democracy. Rae states that protecting democracy is the battle of our lifetime, comparing it to the effort during the Second World War, and emphasizes that we have to fight again.

The next time someone demands you vote strategically, ask: "Will that candidate support proportional representation so no one ever has to vote strategically again?" If the answer is no, refuse to play their game. They are simply using fear to hold onto power.

Proportional representation incentivises cross-partisan consensus and cooperation. First-past-the-post incentivises politicians to call snap elections when polling shows an increased majority with 30–40% of the vote is within reach.

In my opinion, under first pass the post, we do not have a democratic country, and more and more, the bills that are passed show this. We are now more like a dictatorship or an oligarchy when a government can decide to ignore policy, that is already part of our legislation.

Sounds good to me. Then the politician would have to sit as an independent without as much power as they would have had as a member of the party that they left. I like that.

Why are BCers facing a costly, unnecessary snap election? First-past-the-post. When 40% of the vote can deliver an increased majority, politicians choose power grabs over cooperation. Proportional representation removes these toxic incentives. Read our statement: www.fairvote.ca/22/09/2026/f...

The BC opposition is fracturing again, risking another BCNDP majority without a majority vote. First-past-the-post incentivizes non-compete deals and mergers over real choice. Proportional representation would let parties compete openly without stepping on each other’s toes.
