Regarding the OpenAI dump of 722 supposed proofs, I was just visiting a group of mathematicians in Barcelona, and my host had already found that some of the proofs were absolute junk. Others may take longer to evaluate, but as was pointed out at the panel discussion on "AI and Mathematics" I

“Watson’s 1968 book, amid other slights & sexist language directed at Franklin, implied the flash of insight was his. Popular accounts still routinely suggest Franklin missed the significance of the photo. She never had a chance to challenge Watson’s dismissive narrative; she died of cancer in 1958”

Was going through some old notes this afternoon and came upon a response I was invited to give in early 2019 to a popular author who'd just come out with a new treatise on AI doom. I can barely believe it's 7 years later and so little/much has changed.

You’re right—that plane shouldn’t have gone there. That’s my fault, and I should have made sure there wasn’t a terminal in the landing path. Would you like me to call emergency services, or assist with lining up takeoffs?

Covid & Cancer
September 26, 2025 Ben Clark Cancer, Covid-19, News
There is now compelling medical evidence that Covid-19 infections can reactivate dormant cancer cells, and trigger the growth of secondary cancers (metastatic progression). In studies, cancer survivors who contracted Covid had a statistically significant higher risk of cancer-related deaths compared to uninfected cancer survivors.

This is such an important issue that BuDS has decided to run an awareness campaign over the autumn and winter. The aim of the campaign will be to warn cancer survivors of the very real additional danger that Covid poses to them.

This also indicates the essential dishonesty of saying “it’s just a tool.” A hammer is a tool. Nobody writes about the “inevitability” of hammers. Nobody has ever studied the harmful effects of hammers on learning and concluded that teachers must all hit their students with hammers “responsibly.”

Still remember one study where they had "AI" look at photos to diagnose cancer and it had like a 98% or 99% accuracy... ...except all the photos of actual tumors had a ruler next to them for scale. And the algorithm just got really good at spotting rulers in a photograph.

Please allow me to re-share my rough sketch of some advanced carbon capture technology
a cartoon with two panels

panel one is a stick figure saying "oh! a fossil fuel!!" standing above a crudely drawn black lump under a brown ground

Panel two is them walking away and saying "I'll just leave it there"

The head of the person is not a drawn circle but the letter O, because the random software I used to draw it did that for unexplained reasons
