The ICE officer who faces charges for road raging in Minneapolis (pulling a gun on a random motorist who blocked him from driving his unmarked SUV on the shoulder) broke into tears on the stand and said he was under a lot of stress, ok?
Morgan, who was abruptly called up to the Twin Cities from Washington, D.C., said he did not want to join the surge because he was unfamiliar with the area and had heard reports of animosity toward immigration officers.

“I’m not used to that, I’ve never seen something like that in policing,” he said.

The agent broke down in tears while testifying about feeling unsafe and overwhelmed during Operation Metro Surge, describing the atmosphere as a “riot” where he faced relentless harassment, racial slurs and threats of death.

Through a shaky voice, Morgan described the toll his brief deployment took on him and his family.

“I’ve never experienced something like this before,” he said. “I had to take my daughter out of school… because I did the job I’m supposed to do.”

Morgan’s second-degree assault charges stem from a Feb. 5 incident during the surge, when state prosecutors say he illegally drove an unmarked SUV on a Minneapolis freeway shoulder before pointing a firearm at the occupants of a white Cadillac that repeatedly swerved to block him.

Nice bit in this WAPO ballroom donor story where FCC boss Brendan Carr launches a bogus investigation into Dish Network then leverages it to force Charlie Ergen to shell out more for Trump's ballroom (the pressure on Ergen was also beneficial to AT&T and Elon Musk)
"Brendan Carr, the chair of the Federal Communications Commission, wrote Ergen in May to inform him that the agency had begun investigating EchoStar. Carr threatened to yank government licenses that were critical to the survival of the business, accusing EchoStar, owner of Dish Network, of not following through on promises it had made to upgrade its cellphone network.

The following month, Ergen met with Trump and Carr behind closed doors to discuss the investigation, according to Bloomberg. The outlet, citing unnamed sources, said the June 11 discussion included a brief exchange about Ergen’s political donations and whether he gave to candidates in both political parties.

The company referenced a June 11 meeting between Ergen and Carr in a regulatory filing and wrote that Trump “subsequently encouraged the parties involved to reach an amicable resolution.”

Ergen negotiated a deal to sell some of the company’s licenses to AT&T in August, subject to approval of the FCC and Justice Department.

Carr dropped the investigation the following month, thanking Ergen for his responses and for information he had provided.

In December, with the sale still pending, Ergen committed $12.5 million to Trump’s ballroom, according to the donation list. Records indicate Ergen requested that the source of the donation remain anonymous. The donation has not been previously reported.

He committed another $12.5 million in February, according to the list."

Before he trashed it with the Ilhan Omar search, AG Blanche was quite passionate about DOJ's 60-day rule against "actions that may have an impact on an election," which must "never be countenanced." And that was just a judge-ordered filing in a case indicted more than a year before the election.
The huge public filing that the Motion portends would also violate the Justice Manual,
which prohibits "Actions that May Have an Impact on an Election." Justice Manual § 9-85.500 (emphasis added). "Federal prosecutors and agents may never select the timing of any action,
including investigative steps, criminal charges, or statements, for the purpose of affecting any
election, or for the purpose of giving an advantage or disadvantage to any candidate or political
party." Id. Separately, prior to this case, DOJ followed an "Unwritten 60-Day Rule" summarized as follows:
• Former FBI Director Jim Comey: "[W]e avoid taking any action in the run up to an election, if we can avoid it." DOJ-OIG Report at 17.
• Former Attorney General Loretta Lynch: "[I]n general, the practice has been not to take actions that might have an impact on an election, even if it's not an election case or something like that." Id. at 18.
• Former Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates: "To me if it were 90 days off, and you think it has a significant chance of impacting an election, unless there's a reason you need to take that action now you don't do it." Id. at 18.
Departures from these practices should never be countenanced because they risk allowing
prosecutors to impact national elections, but the situation is even worse here where the Special ...

Excerpts from Michael Lewis on DOGE (Guardian article). 1. Gavin Kliger, white nationalist, refused to shake hands with the Black IRS staffer who briefed him on privacy issues. Or pay attention. Kliger now has a defense start-up valued at 1.4B thanks to DOGE. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026...
Phyllis, who loved working for Kathleen and saw falling on hand grenades as part of her job, never told her how this one had felt. She knew Gavin had expressed enthusiasm for white nationalists, and he likely knew that she knew. She tried to break the ice by walking in with her hand extended; Gavin stared at it and declined to shake it, though he had shaken the hands of the white men who had offered them. “He was kind of cool towards me,” said Phyllis. Before she could even start the briefing, he said, You know, I’ve heard these rules before at other agencies. Yes, she said, but these rules are different, because no other agency is governed by this privacy law, and this law can get you thrown in jail very quickly. As she walked him through the basics – how you can’t use your personal phone for business, how if you happen to so much as glimpse a form 1040 with someone’s name on it you must avert your eyes – Gavin played on his phone. “He’s multitasking right in front of me, typing and texting,” said Phyllis. “It was, here’s a routine that I must endure.”

This fraud was then perpetuated by Elon Musk himself, who was running DOGE at the time, and who retweeted a post about the incident while declaring it a "criminal act." The government now "concedes ... that Mr. Musk and officials at FEMA and DHS knew this information was false."
vi. February 11, 2025, Statement by Elon Musk On February 11, 2025, Elon Musk, a Special Government Employee and head of DOGE, retweeted on X a photo of Ms. Comans along with the statement, “FEMA CFO Mary Comans was just fired for funneling $58M to illegal migrant hotels in Manhattan” and he called it a “criminal action.” The Government concedes and the Court finds that other than the fact that Ms. Comans had been fired, the post by Mr. Musk was entirely false. The Government further concedes and the Court further finds that Mr. Musk and officials at FEMA and DHS knew this information was false at the time it was posted. Based on the unchallenged facts and the fact that Mr. Musk was the head of DOGE, he knew or should have known that any payments made to state or local governments through a FEMA grant in February 2025 were approved by his subordinates. Finally, the fact that Mr. Musk posted a picture of Ms. Comans to his millions of followers while falsely characterizing her government service as a “criminal action” was clearly intended to make her afraid. Posting Ms. Comans’ picture served no legitimate governmental interest and was little more than state sanctioned intimidation.

After years of championing "free speech," Texas lawmakers have enabled a dramatic rise of censorship in Texas universities, banning concepts, canceling courses and closing departments seen as "woke," and even using AI bots as censors. All in the name of freedom. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/1...
In other professors’ syllabi, the bot flagged the Pulitzer Prize–winning play Angels in America by Tony Kushner, essays by the Mexican American MacArthur genius grant recipient Sandra Cisneros, and materials related to a class about the Holocaust (that professor was told to drop material regarding Nazi persecution of LGBTQ people).

Putting aside the ideological slant of the new rules, the bot, like many large language models, seems to “hallucinate,” or make mistakes. The AAUP lawsuit lists texts banned for their “sex-based ecofeminist framework” and “gendered ecofeminist frameworks.” These phrases might sound persuasively like academese, but the academics behind the lawsuit had never heard of them; these concepts “do not exist,” the complaint says. Matthew Pehl, a history professor at Tech, told me that he knew several people who’d received reports from the system that were “plainly written by an AI that had hallucinated content or confused content from one class to another.”

New open-access paper: Direct File showed that govt could build its own user-centered platform without relying on contractors. But the product was killed after a DOGE lead spoke with the private tax preparation industry lobbying against a private option. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...
The ability of governments to build and sustain public interest capacity partly depends upon the position of private interests, and the ability and willingness of a government to resist private interest opposition.
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) built a digital tax reporting service, Direct File, that created significant public value for users.
Direct File depended upon the creation of internal capacity: a government digital service team that could build digital platforms, rather than procuring a product from private vendors. Government control of the process allowed agile development and iterative improvement that would have been impossible under a traditional outsourcing model.
Long-standing opposition to Direct File by the private tax preparation industry, combined with Trump-era downsizing by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led to the elimination of the tool.
