A lot of the DEI/anti-HR backlash was actually about this issue much more than race/gender stuff. Many men with economic/bureaucratic power, ranging from actual world leaders to GMs at restaurants, find this coercion and intermingling to be core to their gender identity

It is interesting how gas prices are one thing that rarely gets marked against inflation, even by policy folks. $5/gallon gas would be $1.60 in 1985 dollars!! While it works against the admin today, it won't always, and it has long-term: Look at this chart and tell me we need to cut the gas tax??

As this piece makes clear, the reification of the "rural" aesthetic is primarily about disciplining the power of America's growing cosmopolitan class (and their tendencies towards socialism & equality) These "rural" markers are primarily suburban and consumerist now, which bounds their authenticity

Good article, and a topic that voters should learn more about. Climate change-connected disasters will accelerate in both blue and red states, and a regulated, competitive but profit-driven home insurance market will be key for getting through it as smoothly as possible.

Something that makes Japan's politics/culture refreshing to me is the relative *lack* of this idea. There are pop culture texts that try to convince people to elevate respect for rural life, but the norm is that cities (Tokyo esp) have real, valid people in them, and in fact may be more authentic

Or, at least asked to learn a foreign language that is not theirs and specialize in another region in addition to theirs. I was actively dissuaded from learning Spanish in graduate school and specializing in Latin America.

Really intl students should be *forbidden* from their own region in Area Studies. They'll learn more about process/research, they'll create a lot more new insight, there would be more cross cultural encounters, etc. Would be better for general, academic, and diplomatic goals.

I think Dem Electeds aren't hammering on (a) enough. Blaming Trump for recklessly knocking out this support for our food supply, and building a farmer-connected coalition to restore them, could yield a surprising number of votes in 2028, many in key areas. Plus the aesthetics would be good.

Flock/etc Bad, speed/etc cameras good is my alignment, but not it feels like nobody is in that quadrant with me. Cars are uniquely dangerous and choosing to drive one puts you in a special, limited zone of extra surveillance due to the external costs of your choice.

Agreed: That Korean office study that clearly showed airborne transmission was in March iirc, and I had to watch every doctor, public health org, govt. official, and news story be 100% wrong for like a year... I'm not sure how that damaged me, but of course it did, it's a tear in my social fabric!
