It is interesting how gas prices are one thing that rarely gets marked against inflation, even by policy folks. $5/gallon gas would be $1.60 in 1985 dollars!! While it works against the admin today, it won't always, and it has long-term: Look at this chart and tell me we need to cut the gas tax??

If you mostly know Yayoi Kusama as the neat dot lady, I'd encourage you to dig in because there's other stuff going on:

Tomino once again vindicated, but it's getting worse by the year:
He then went on to describe Shinkai's works as "stories about a boy and a girl who are always stretching out their hands towards each other," and said, "And yet the boy's hand never reaches the girls crotch."

While it never went away in Japanese TV as fully, there's been a bit of a resurgence in prominent smoking in anime for sure in the last year or so. There's like a cultural rhythm/cycle thing going on here too that should be part of the public health counter strategy I think

You make one cynical, mean-spirited, and rizzless speech, and your entire life's work gets permanently recast in the minds of the literate audience that you'd most like to reach.

Whatever happens with East Potomac Park, golf course or no, now or in the future... ALL discussions should start with "Why isn't there a little pedestrian bridge by the Wharf?"

As a society we have not reckoned with how many people have left manufacturing and agriculture in the last 50 years. Adding this shock on top of that would have... Effects.

At this moment *every* foreign policy argument has to start with the question of whether the future is renewable/electric or oil/hydrocarbon. Nagy links to this article in reference to what Canada should do next, so it's clear what his (wrong) answer is.

Byamba fits the timeline, and has a bald head that matches the picture more or less. He would've been an ex-real rikishi, did participate in some of those off-brand championships, and the photo looks like one of those barnstorming bar events that are common in the States

Wondering how many "Down the Road" issues are being planted that will come up post-Trump? Kantei posting images of PM Takaichi smiling in front of this copy "about" Obama seems... incautious for example. Lots of possible things for Dems to stew over when the PM embraces someone so undiplomatic

Japan-Iran ties are one of those surprising relationships that can catch US policymakers off guard, and that can get awkward real fast. (See also, Myanmar) Ambassador Aikawa explains: www.ir.emb-japan.go.jp/files/100211...

Every state is different constitutionally, but imagining that this comes through an elected Secretary of State? Folks from places that don't elect those separately sometimes miss the big amounts of independence they can have...

A problem with gerontocracy is that the party's leadership cannot cope with this graph, like literally cannot perceive how much the world of their voters has changed

All US rural/urban politics discussions should start with this graph. We don't actually have the rural population doing rural things we think we have anymore. And most of what we think of as "rural populations" are actually in small cities, living in urban/suburban modes.

Lots of buildings across the way on the National Mall. The physical infrastructure for a really extraordinary bureaucratic effort that won WW2. A world wonder, really.

Pivotal moment for the EU I think: As the EU thinks about creating new security structures to meet this moment, they will lay the track for the future. For instance, if a unified European Command is coming, we may see its origins this week through a coordinating defence council or similar
