A no-brainer. This would be enough to fix our schools, healthcare, and housing within the first year alone.

🧵Universal Basic Income - Just Fund Services Universal Basic Income (UBI), is being thrown around a lot these days as a catch-all solution for economic woes. While it feels intuitive to say that extra money will solve all problems, a better solution exists.

The Glebe BIA had a report done about the area. We think this image perfectly encapsulates the reason for hesitancy by the business owners to get rid of parking. While 86% of the respondents who come to shop said they get there by means other than driving, 94% of the owners said they drove.

“The voters are always right” can be a useful fiction for candidates trying to get elected. But it’s not true. Sometimes voters make dumb decisions. And it’s valid to recognize that. (Especially as foreigners who didn’t get to vote in your election but still suffer the consequences.)

“After-tax corporate profits to 21 per cent of Canadian GDP in 2022 (the highest share in history), even as Canadians struggled with affordability.” Canada needs institutional price controls. www.thestar.com/business/opi...

Trump's war on Iran hasn't altered Canada's cost of making gas — at all. So why are we being hosed at the pumps?
Policy choices, not market forces of a war halfway around the world, explain the spike in prices, writes Jim Stanford, leading to unnecessary economy-wide inflation and higher interest rates.

The issue of wealth inequality is one of the most pressing social and economic problems of our time. States must take action to rein in the power of billionaires—and one key tool for doing so would be a wealth tax. By @lindamcquaig.bsky.social + Neil Brooks. www.policyalternatives.ca/news-researc...

But here in Ottawa, whereas the original plan for the revitalized ByWard called for full pedestrianization of a key street, the “refreshed” plan will only see pedestrianization on key dates like Canada Day. We lack boldness, vision, and even commitment to follow through on the original plan.

8/ Freedom will not come from military intervention by outside powers, it can only come from the Iranian people. War is not the way.

🧵Voter Reform and the Hope for a Better Democracy #VoterReform is a classic #Canadian case of policy flip flops: infinitely discussed, never implemented. But, in an era where the world is seeing increasing democratic backsliding, we must work together to secure our own. tinyurl.com/2uww9a7r

🧵ICE - Why #Canadians Should Be Angry, Too. ICE has just executed yet another innocent American. As Canadians, seeing our neighbours fall to authoritarianism is existentially terrifying. Terrifyingly, we have skin in this game, too; and we need to take direct action.

A great way to prevent #Ottawa's continued sprawling is to reduce car-parking maximums for box stores via #OttCity's new Zoning By-law. Thanks to @ottawacitizen.com for publishing our op-ed with Walkable Ottawa on this. #SustainableCities #Sprawl #CarParking ottawacitizen.com/opinion/comm...

Ottawa's box store parking lots are too big. We can fix that. | Opinion
A store that requires hundreds of parking spots creates an environment that’s hostile to humans. Have you ever walked across one? | Opinion

Alex Pretti, a 37-year old nurse, was just murdered by ICE in Minneapolis. We must organize and build solidarity across borders to #AbolishICE. First up - BC billionaire Jim Pattison owns a US warehouse that will soon be turned into an ICE processing facility. Tell Eby to shut down the deal. #bcpoli

300 high capacity buses like this one are reaching 16 years of age this year, which is past the expected lifetime of a bus. Another 40 buses will be turning 18. We can't expect to replace them with just 50 new high capacity buses, and we can't expect shorter electric buses to replace them 1 for 1

You could be eligible for a rent reduction—no matter what your landlord says. Pass this on, especially if you or your friends live in a multi-residential building in Ottawa that is more than 15 years old.

Legal authority to determine zoning is clearly the provinces'. But the feds do carry a pretty big stick when they wade in with their chequebook.

Except the bill does actually violate the right to life. The Ford administration literally added immunity from lawsuits for deaths caused by this bill. Also, “unelected judges?” Justices aren’t employed to campaign. They’re employed to uphold the law. MAGA mentality. tinyurl.com/yx9rm3sd

“This bridge fuel narrative—the argument that we need to develop an entirely new fossil fuel resource, unconventional shale gas, in order to solve climate change—wasn’t accurate in 2009…and it’s certainly not accurate today.” #Climate #FossilFuels www.nationalobserver.com/2025/01/02/o...

It’s time to abandon the ‘bridge fuel’ fantasy
The problem is fossil gas, which is mostly composed of methane, is a gas, which means it leaks constantly: at wells, in pipelines and from gas cookstoves in people’s homes.

An important exploration into how the tide of politics can delay public necessities like transit. In a perfect world, our sprawl-y Canadian cities would all be anchored along linear rail corridors just like The Trillium Line. These projects are needed. And we need to get them right.

🧵#Municipal Mergers: #Democratic Backsliding (Thread) 🇨🇦If you live in #Ontario or #Quebec, chances are you are located in a city that has been “amalgamated.” You’ve likely even heard people harp on about it before. But what does that mean? How did it take away a key piece of our freedom?

So many key facts about daily life that are used by decision makers are found via investigative journalists. Reform for journalists - especially in a time where they are demonized by governments - is sorely needed!
