This weekend, one of my brothers gets married, and I’ll have to share space with my other brother and his wife who haven’t spoken to me since I came out as gay and poly and my partner came out as trans. So that’s fun, and I’m not stressed at all.

I’ve written a review of Roxanna Bennett’s latest poetry collection, We Gladly Feast on Those Who Would Subdue Us. The title is a little nod to the Addams Family motto.

Story time. So one of my early jobs while I was in university was at Booster Juice. And I was forewarned by one of the girls I worked with that this lesbian couple around our age would come by and order, and then make out in front of you to see if you’d react. If you didn’t react, they’d tip you.

I’m thrilled to have a new poem in the Literary Review of Canada about my girlfriend’s cockatiel singing to my feet. He looooooves my feet 😂
My Girlfriend’s Cockatiel Sings to My Feet
By Courtney Bates-Hardy

He adores my feet and their many-coloured socks,
bright stripes like strange birds, he’s hopeless
in love, follows them around the house,
composes gifts of music he’s stolen from
radio waves and tunes my girlfriend whistles.
He’d make a nest for them if he could, show them
he can provide, Desperate for an answer,
he’ll nip a toe, willing the weird birds to move, to respond, forcing us to tuck our feet
under blankets, protected from his onslaughts. We are careful
not to move our feet too seductively, we favour
black socks, we make our own nest in bed and sing
our own love songs, we show our bare feet
to no one but each other.

My writing group has released our first collaborative chapbook with Gridlock Lit! It’s all about what it’s like being queer on the Prairies. We each wrote a poem for the collection called “My Queer” and “My Bad Queer,” and then wrote a poem together called “Our Queer.” You can order a copy online!

The sapphic Bridgerton season is in production now and it makes me want to cry. I hoped, but never, expected that a mainstream period romance would include queer characters and now they’re going to be leading a whole season! 😭

If people only get their #yqr news from JustBins, of course they’re going to start thinking Regina is a shithole that’s full of accidents and stabbings, but then they’re missing all of the good things that happen here every day.

It makes me want to cry thinking about my younger self watching the Pride parade because I didn’t feel like I’d earned the right to march yet, but still wearing bi colours and makeup (before I realized I was a lesbian). And now I organize the Pride float for the library 🥺

Watching Love is Blind is like anthropological to me. It’s this whole other culture that I don’t see myself in at all as a queer person and it’s both fascinating and disturbing.

CBC producing all these think pieces and interviews about why booksellers are going to judge the Giller Prize this year like it’s a big mystery. Well, I can solve it for you: it’s because most writers don’t want to be associated with the award anymore after the boycott 🤷🏻‍♀️

I'm here again to say this in regard to gen AI in the arts. My issue with LLMs is multi-pronged. It is built off of stolen work. Everytime one uses it, it supports billionaires who want to gain control of the arts and take it from the hands of writers and artists. Also it is killing the planet.
