Yes, you can "really go shortened first name" with me! And thank you for your generous words. This was a labor of love for the whole team. Grateful to @mellon.org and to Engage R&D, the consultancy we collaborated with. And, of course to CBA leaders and the CBAs themselves!

Mine, too. Those cards also mapped the places in the stacks where I'd find the books I needed to read to do research for my papers—and, eventually, for my dissertation. The tactile (catalog cards and books) led to the cerebral.

I thank Nikki Giovanni for teaching us so much, and tonight, for this poem, which is never not relevant.
Allowable, by Nikki Giovanni
I killed a spider
Not a murderous brown recluse
Nor even a black widow
And if the truth were told this
Was only a small
Sort of papery spider
Who should have run
When I picked up the book
But she didn't
And she scared me
And I smashed her
I dont think
I'm allowed
To kill something
Because I am
Frightened

Another of my students, a historical preservationist, has created a zine — and is proposing a zine series — to reinvigorate historical texts. First up: Booker T. Washington's 1915 "The Rural Negro School + its Relation to the Community," which frames the school as central to a whole social ecology ✨
